Was looking up about Zelda there and just found out that the Legend of Zelda cartoon is set for a DVD box set (!!!) release in October (source: dvdtoons.com).

    For those if you who've never seen this fantastic series here's what you'll come to expect;

I seem to remember seeing a clip online one time - do they have cheesy American accents?

That has to be the most disturbing cartoon I have ever sat through an episode of.

Wasn't there a Kid Icarus cartoon as well? Or was that part of a Nintendo jamboree of cartoons?

Kid icarus was in Captain N which also featured a load of other characters that appeared on the system such as Megaman and the odd cameo by other characters like Simon Belmont from Castlevania. Don't think he had his own cartoon series.

yeh i remember watching it aswell more for the fact that i loved the zelda games and just watching the cartoon for that fact.

i'll still buy this if it comes out over here, would be nice to look back on.

anyone know if there's one planned for the super mario bros. cartoon?

When I was kid, I used to always watch Zelda, Mario and Captain N.
    I used to love them!

They even had their own cereal, which was weird. The box was split down the middle, so that one side poured out zelda cereal, the other was mario.

I used to love Captain N. Mother Brain was great, wasn't there an episode with Link in it and Mother Brain teamed up with Ganondorf?

I also seem to remember they actually had Paperboy in an episode. It turns out that Paperboy is illiterate and can't even read the newspapers he delivers, which comes in handy as Mother Brain uses the newspaper print to brain wash everyone... I'm not too sure what the lesson of the episode was though...

There is a channel on Sky Digital that shows the Super Mario Bros. cartoons. It's really not very good. It's the one where Bowser has all his different kids. I think there was a later series that had Yoshi in it as well that is sometimes on.

How many sonic cartoons have there been?
    i can vaguely recall *
The Archie/sonic the comic based one (with grounder and the robotic chicken)
The Sonic leads an underground rebellion (which was half decent)
Sonic in a rock band (sweet jebus noooooooo)
Sonic X (a chao, cream the Fooking rabit and amy soddin' rose...ARRRGH!)
    Sonic the Male Escort

    * = One of the list is a lie

there has been in total 5 sonic cartoons:

the adventures of sonic the hedgehog: The really crappy comedy one with the stupid robotnik, scratch and grounder (the brilliant sonic the comic based its robotniks appearance off this one, but had the evil of the other robotniks)

Sonic Underground: The really bad one with the annoying voices and bad storyline...BUT the robotnik in it had some great lines (will get them later)

Sonic the Hedgehog (satam): The Resistance one, which had a brilliant robotnik and a grat storyline...sadly got cancelled and replaced with power rangers just before introducing Knuckles (supposable) THe Archie comics followed this storyline, and actually had some great comics.

Sonic the Hedgehog the animated movie: A japanese mini series cut into a movie, had all the characters upto sonic 3 (except amy rose) was actually very good despite poor dub, metal sonic (Metalix to sonic the comic readers) was excellent in it, despite cheesy ending.

Sonic X: The one that was butchered. Seriously see the first 3 episodes in the original japanese, excellent soundtrack, great story and some good voiceacting. See them dubbed...horrible butchered, crappy hero music and terrible voices. then the next 22 episodes are quite dull, and the last 2 of season 1 in japanese were great but again dubbed they were ruined. havnt seen seasons 2-4 subtitled...but dubbed they were woefull, i have been told they are good in original. Esp the Sonic Adventure 2 storyline (i tell a lie i did see episode 38 with neither dub or subtitle and it did indeed rock in original jap.)

i was a very big (and still am) sonic nut.

"ahh it was great though ted"

it's great to see how crappy it is now but back then it was brilliant i think anyway.

captain N was also excellent, can you get DVD's of captain N?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I never really liked Captain N himself... he just seemed like a cheating little git using the pause button the way he did.

you gotta remember cheating was cool back then like smoking, drugs and rubber pants...

uhh...no but i remember the level select cheat and debug mode for sonic 1...you know that saved me when i was really young and i cant remember left from right...i would be humming "UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT A+START" while mimicking the controller in my palm when i was asked left from right...

the debug was up, c down, c left, c right, c then A+B+C and start

sonic 3 had that horrible cheat which you had to press up up down down up up up up in the space of 5 seconds from the sega sign to the title screen.

I remember I had a cheat for Ghouls and Ghosts on the C64.

You could press a key on the keyboard and Arthur would get his armour back. But if you held it down he'd never lose his armour. So I got a pencil and pointed it down onto the key and placed a heavy book on top at an angle to hold the thing down.

That was before I got an Action Replay cartridge... ahhh.. POKES...

I still don't know how they came up with the Creatures 2 cheat where you rubbed a wet finger across the joypad port.

I can still rhyme off the Sonic 1 cheats :D
