How did he manage that, did he buy it brand new or was it Second Hand.

That is strange, When registering a car from the UK, you need to take the V5 (Registration Document) to your local VRT Office and they'll sort it out. Its not the same as a Change of Ownership here where the vendor sends off the Registration Documents to the Motor Tax Office.

He shouldve kept the change of ownership form that he signed when he bought it, or at least a photocopy of it.
This is then handed into the VRO when you are paying the VRT and registering it here in Ireland. Then when the car is registered to you and you first pay the roadtax on it you will receive a new logbook in the post.

If he didnt keep a copy of the change of ownership form but sent the original off to the DVLA they will return it to him in the post when they see his home address is outside the UK mainland. If he didnt put his irish address on it then it might get complicated but he should just give the DVLA a ring anyway...

No no no...Like i said earlier when you are importing a car from the UK you hold onto the V5 and give it to the VRO.

Your mate must have got a really cool car that he got so excited that he forgot to check out the procedures or something.

Hey if the deal was honest he should go back to the person that he bought the car from and see what he has done with the V5, the seller probably sent it to there Vehicle Registration Office in the UK and was sent back to the seller. London is cheap to fly there you know make a week end out of it.

But remember from next time, you hold onto the V5. I highly recommend importing from the UK, i get my cars from the north but do some homework first.

    Best of luck

Just out of curiousity, what car did he buy?

If he didn't keep the whole V5 and hand it into the VRO here, you need to get a certificate of export from the DVLA for the car and pass that on to the VRO.

They wont send it back to the seller they'll send it to the buyers contact address (Im talking from personal first hand experience here). If the seller says he sent it into the DVLA (uk reg office) and they say they dont have it then its highly likely they do have it and its just lost in their massive backlog.
I've found most correspondence with the DVLA to take approx 8 weeks.

Heres a pic of the form he got is this enough to sort out the VRT

That looks like the part of the V5 that you would keep if he was a UK resident buying the car (and not exporting it to a foreign country).
Your mate should have kept the whole V5. It's an easy mistake to make though because it says on the V5 that the buyer should only keep the part you have scanned in there, it says nothing about keeping the whole thing, which you need to do if the buyer is taking the car outside the UK.

The seller - if he has sent in his part of the V5 - will eventually receive a certificate of permanent export. Get him to fax you over a copy of this and that should be enough for the VRO here.
