As some of you may know the cream of Dublin's tracksuit wearing community decided to bring my car to a BBQ lastweek in Glencree without inviting me. So, faced with having to shell out for a new car I'm stumped as to which one to get.

I have 8k to spend and I'm looking for something as close to a drivers car as I can get for it. The rough list I have so far is the following

    Nissan 200sx (turbo version)

Honda CRX (really would LOVE a 2nd gen but finding one in good nick will be tough, so I'm looking at Del Sols instead, 1.6 vti's)

Celica - I know *nothing* about these cars so please enlighten me.

I really like the look of VW Cordobas, but again finding one is hard.

    2nd Gen MR2

Anyone got anything to say about that lot, or any other advice. Please don't turn this thread into a flame war!

8k I wouldnt touch the 200sx as they are owned by boy racers that put junk on them and thrash them about the place and you just dont know what your getting into till later.

CRX is a bit better but del sols are readily available.

celica as with the 200sx but usually worse.

Cordoba is a good choice it is basically a flagship car of its day IMHO.

MR2 as with the celica and 200sx but if you find one being sold by an older person as these are seen by 50-60yos as a fun retirement car and are a good bet. Have you considered.

    Honda civic
    any citroens?

Most of these cars would probably have been driven hard at some stage as that is the type of car they are.

I am sure you mean VW Corrado? A Cordoba is a Seat saloon. :D

These are as rare as hen's teeth, they are way more common in the UK, you might want to consider importing one. They were available in 2.0i, 2.0i supercharged called the G60 and 2.8 VR6. Any sold here were more than likely the 2.0i model.

Found this one for sale but it is a bit pricy for a 2.0i.

Here are some nice Celicas also. The 2.0 was pretty quick in its day and they are very reliable. They could take a fair bit of abuse and are very easy to modify if your into that. The GT4 is very rare and comes with a turbo and 4 wheel drive.

    i would pick
    MK2 crx over Del sol
    Celica over 200SX

if space is not your concern, then get 1995 MR2

there is always 1.8 integra but they are highly flammable too

Sounds like you need a Fiat coupe Turbo. Thought about one??

corrado is actually supercharged 1.8L engine. Only apparently only marginally slower than the VR6.

    actually here

didnt read all that but there might be some more helpful info

not all of the corrados are supercharged ,

    They were available in 1.8 16v 136bhp and 1.8 16v 160bhp supercharged (G60) along with 2.0 8v 115bhp, 2.0 16v 136bhp and 2.8 VR6 190bhp.

One of the unique features of this car was that the rear spoiler would automatically rise a couple of inches when the car reached 50mph to improve downforce.

Bang for buck, this seems like a great buy (if you can live with the bling bling wheels):

'98 but only 27K miles with all these options:

"clifford remote start/turbo time-down alarm , Sony MP3/cd 10 stack , 18" Alloys , bluetooth phone kit , FFSH , Timing belt prior to sale"

Actually since I started this thread I'm very close to buying a sensible alfa 156 2ltr. Have been offered a decent deal on one and am seriously considering it.

Don't buy until getting a green light from an alfa specialist. If the car is bad it will cost you loads to fix. Needs to be inspected before hand or else sold with a decent warranty.
Also MPG is not great on 2 ltr version.

Before you commit, check out the following one which is going very cheap:

The guy posting the thread knows Alfa's very well so, if he recommends it, it's probably a good example.

(You might want to confirm whether the timing belt has been changed.)
