Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Apple & PC on WiFi Network

After years of using an Apple iMac (now 5 years old!), I've just bought a Samsung X20 laptop. I want to set-up a wireless network for my broadband connection in my apt. Can I buy an 802.11g 'dongle' or similar (like with Bluetooth) to hook up my iMac to the network through it's firewire/usb port? Can this be done or do I need a WiFi card in the computer?

Also, will the machines read each other for transfer of files. I'll be adding a printer to the network also which I want to be able to access from both. Probably wired to the router though (ethernet?).

the USB dongles you can get for wireless should work with the imac and you need a router and you can get the printer hooked by Ethernet with a print server (€70) at komplett.ie

Hey, thanks, but why the need for a print server? Can I not just connect the ethernet cable and send jobs when I want to print, similar to a normal usb/firewire printer?

I presume your iMac is a G3. Your choices in wireless networking, using USB dongles, are very limited. D-Link DWL-122 gives you only 11Mbps. Why not consider using a wireless ethernet bridge or gaming adaptor? These connect to your iMac via the network/ethernet port, and run at 54Mbps or higher, depending on the router you use.

If your iMac is a G4, then you have either the Airport (11Mbps) or Airport Extreme (54Mbps). The latter is possible if your iMac is a 1 or 1.2GHz machine.

Yeh, it's a G3 alright! It's got Usb 1.0, Firewire and Ethernet ports. What do I hook up to the ethernet port to get 54mbps?

There are several offerings from different manufacturers - Buffalo, D-Link, etc. Seearch for "wireless ethernet" or "gaming adaptor". Maybe www.expansys.ie or www.amazon.co.uk will start you off with the correct model numbers.

I use the D-Link DWL-G810 - a little pricey on this side of the Atlantic, but it is one of the *very* few which sport WPA-PSK for security. If you just use WEP, then you will not have much trouble.
