Enough of the vague posts - if you have a specific Webmaster related question - ask it, otherwise this will be deleted

whats vague about that - im wondering are there any more webmasters out there involved in the adult industry who are from ireland or am i alone in being the only adult webmaster

i'm curious, do you make any money from it, or is it just a hobby?

i used to (vaguely) know someone who had a site which he had where he used to somehow convince local girls to pose for him doing various things.

i'm pretty sure he just did it because that's how he got his jollies, but i'm just curious if you make much money.

I know someone programming for the pr0n industry - he does some web stuff too - but since he moved to London I don't hear from him much.

I used to do it, it's *quite* lucrative, but utterly soul destroying.

Actually on this subject matter - I would like to hear from Irish hosting companies and their thoughts on the adult market, the legalities of hosting such sites and earning from such sites (as I would presume they are more in the know, then your average developer/designer)

    Legally it's a mess. "Morally" it's a nightmare.

I know people in the adult industry that have brochureware sites, but that's not quite the same thing.

Ive been in it for now four years i think .. i also have a day job but yes im doing pretty well from my site - its not hardcore and i dont do shoots but i had considered it

i wouldnt host in ireland - it costs way too much for a highly trafficked site like mine to pay for .. so were off in panama sitting on some nice cheap l3 bandwith boxes

The cost of hosting porn in Ireland is the least of your worries.
Try finding a hosting company in the 32 counties that would actually host it to begin with.

That's the problem I had initially. Couldn't find a host here at all, ended up hosting in the US.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,739 ✭✭✭mneylon

    I'm not surprised :)

There was a discussion here about the entire legal aspect of "adult" content in Irish law about a year ago (I think). The legislation, like so many laws related to the "digital realm" is extremely vague or simply subjective.

ive just spent two months with my accountant trying to figure out where to start with submitting taxes and basically im the first case of a legally registered adult webmaster paying taxes so it was frustrating to say the least

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

but you can walk into a newsagent and get a hardcore poro mag off the shelves. what's the difference?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

"Hardcore" porn ... off the shelf in a regular newsagents? Excuse me if I'm wrong but I thought it was only soft porn mags (i.e.: the likes of Playboy, Penthouse, etc.) that was available in normal high street newsagents here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,739 ✭✭✭mneylon

You can be titillated in your local newsagent. You can't get anything that would be described as "porn"

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭Scruff

I think yer right there Bard. Afaik its only softcore, though it has got more explicit. Me thinks you have to go to an Adult shop to get the hardcore stuff.
Though why you'd want to these days is beyond me. Buy yerself a reasonably priced laser printer and ye can create yer own magazine without all those adds on every second page ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

nope. quite a few newsagents do hardcore stuff now. there was a big hoo haa about it about 12 months ago. either spa or centra decided they would stock hardcore stuff in some of their stores.

pretty sure you'll find them in the one near the luas line on o'connell st.

afaik anythign in a sealed plastic wrapper with the bottom 4/5 greyed out will generally be the hardcore ones. hustler and the like.

    or so i'm told. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 158 ✭✭JOOROWNED

    Hah @ so im told

My issue wasnt the type of porn but the costs of hosting here its horrendous in comparison to abroad.

My site is mainly glamour - playboy stuff anyways so thats not even a concern and yes ive seen thos 4/5 magazines in a centra in louth

    I wouldn't agree entirely.
Irish hosting companies offer a much higher level of technical expertise and support than a lot of their foreign counterparts.
A lot of the US "companies" are resellers of resellers of resellers and have made no investment in infrastructure or staff.

I find that the average cost of a dedicated server from true hosting companies is a lot cheaper in Ireland than it is in the US. I'm paying through the nose for a dedicated server in the US and I have found one with similar spec and 2.5 times the bandwidth for half the price here in Ireland!

Irish hosting will save you money! Even for pron hosting :):)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭steve-hosting36

    mmmm, prawn toast :)

Hi, yes indeed, I am an adult webmaster. I would have replied earlier but 4 of my lesbians escaped.

Found them trying to get on a bus to Carlow, poor things nearly froze to death in those bikinis

    - were desperately licking each other to try and keep warm. :(

    Look who's talking ;)

But no, seriously, there's a good bit of truth to this. When things go wrong, it's nice to have a real person involved somewhere...

There are some interesting thoughts on the ethics of the industry (porn, not hosting) here: http://www.deepveininsomnia.com/SBcopsc1.htm (probably NSFW).

I hope you are referring to my vested interest and nothing else

    This is the key.
If your web presence is a serious part of your business you don't want to entrust it to a $random idiot. You want, need and deserve to have it properly hosted and have that hosting backed by proper technical support.

A lot of the US "companies" are merely cpanel resellers who cannot deal with anything that cpanel cannot handle.
