First Qualifying Round — First Leg
    Liverpool -VS- Total Network Solutions
    Wednesday, 13th July — 7.45 — Live: ITV2

Not sure if RTÉ2 or TV3 will also cover the match live. I would expect RTÉ2 to broadcast the Glentoran -vs- Shels match which is the same night (7pm).

i wouldnt consider a Liverpool match to be of high importance for Irish television or are ye on about that all irish match?

There are more Liverpool fans in Ireland than there are Shels fans, and the majority of those fans will actually have gone to the match, compared to the majority of the Lverpool fans not going

I think setanta are trying to show the shels match

But there are much more people in Ireland that would watch the north-south derby. I doubt any English team in years and years has attracted the viewing figures of the Shels-Depor matches.

Setanta don't have any CL TV rights. Unless they are trying a one-off broadcast. I'm pretty sure RTÉ will acquire the rights to it.

I'm sure the Irish viewing figures for CL matches involving Liverpool, Celtic, ManU etc last season were higher.

id love to see the shels and glentoran game. alot more than i would like to see liverpool stroll around tns.

they are the same night yea? its not split up into tuesday/wednesday night no? Only liverpool fans would watch liverpool vs TNS, even then not a huge amount of them.

Most football fans would watch shels vs glens though. What about UTV? they might show the shels vs glens match?

I don't know the exact figure but I was going on what thejollyrodger said. With a bit of googling I think it was around 350-400 thousand. That is a huge figure for RTE 2. The Confederations cup is attracting around 150,000. Here's a piece I found about the Depor Shels match:

The match was televised live by the national broadcaster in direct competition to the Manchester United v Dinamo Bucharest game on another Irish channel. The impact the Deportivo game had upon the public imagination was confirmed when viewing figures for both matches were released: 55% more people opted to watch Shels rather than United's Irish trio of Roy Keane, John O'Shea and Liam Miller. In all, 10% of the entire population opted to watch Shels. For a nation where every other kid seems to own a Manchester United jersey, that statistic says it all.

I did a bit of googling myself. From what I see here is was 242 thousand. True, a huge viewership for RTÉ2 and higher than I thought it was but not higher than English teams in latter stages of the CL last season. I think TV3 will show Liverpool and RTÉ2 will show Shels — a copy of last year. I don't think UTV will show the game as ITV2 are already showing Liverpool and that might not go down too well.

UTV is for the north though, i dunno if they can get ITV2 but dont south we cant unless we have sky digital.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

up north they can get ITV2 on Sky, Cable and Freeview

down south it is only available for those who have a FTV card for Sky, those who are lucky enough to receive Freeview and on some cable services

I would much rather watch the Shels match than Liverpool v TNS. I'm not a supporter of either but there's national pride at stake and I like to see the EL teams do well in europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

We should start banging in emails, telling them we want to see the match (Shels) and want to know their plans! (I'll be at the game, but will video it still and watch it upon my arrival home), and its good for the league again!

Liverpool v TNS is live on ITV2 .

http://knplogic.com will have the listing for Shels when known

    Liverpool vs TNS.

Even hardcore Pool fans would struggle to watch that.

I would If I was a fan. I even watch the reserves when I can.

So Liverpool are 2-0 up after 20 minutes. Would you actually watch the rest of it.

Lets say its sunny outside and the grass needs to be cut too. :D

Ill be watching anyway. Will get a glimpse at what systems rafa may try for the season as well as some of the new folks in action. Not to mention about 7 Liverpool goals! :D

Thank God , it would have been a disgrace if the game was not available to watch on a Republic station .

Lads RTE will always show an Irish team in Europe ahead of an English team. Anyway the Liverpool game will attract a very small audience where a North v South champions League game will attract a big audience.

It was a no brainer for RTE really

Do you reckon the Milan fans turned off at 3-0 in the CL final?

I'd say a few did. I did. By the time I got home it was 3-3. :)

BUT, this is the 1st qualifying round we're talking about.

I would be absolutley amazed if the Shels game attracted less viewers than the Liverpool game, I'd say it wont even be close.

Glentoran v Shels kicks off at 7 though (Which means RTE must be planning to show no build up at all) so you can watch at least a half of both.

I know its not CL, but any idea if the small town in Munsters games will be on TV? :)

RTÉ confirmed on the programme yesterday that they will be showing the Shels Steau game next Wednesday didn't give a time though .

Does anyone else notice that RTÉ are gradually giving Shels better and longer coverage of their games in Europe ? . Maybe they realised people might actually like to watch a LOI side  .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,163 ✭✭✭Slash/ED

Yeah, a half hour build up this time as opposed to around a minute for the first leg!

Yeah wonder what the viewing figures were for the Games (both legs) .... also see RTé have erected a temporary TV studio between the new stand/Leo Burdocks .. think they had to have it within 6 feet of a Chipper ( something to do with Pat Dolans contract :D )
