"Farewell to 121 Class" Commemorative Trip in Aid of Railway Children by Media & P.R.
    News release, Railway Children special

Due to the high level of interest expressed in the “Farewell to 121 Class” operation on July 16th, and the request from many enthusiasts for rolling stock of the same era, Iarnród Éireann has decided to run this event from Dublin Connolly station to Sligo as a special train using coaches more appropriate to the heyday of 121 Class traction on passenger trains.

The UK-based RAIL magazine in association with Iarnród Éireann is running the trip in support of an international children’s charity. Rail fans and staff have expressed an interest in celebrating the departure from passenger train operation of the first General Motors locomotives to be sold into Europe which arrived here in 1961.

Consequently the “Farewell” special will be a Cravens set with catering, and will depart immediately after the 08:30hrs Sligo service train on Saturday, July 16th from Connolly Station, the return journey following the 13:25hrs service train from Sligo Mac Diarmada Station. This will allow for the maximum number possible wishing to celebrate the event and provide a suitable send-off to a locomotive class which served the network faithfully for more than 40 years.

A raffle will be run on the day with great prizes, including a two-day railbreak.

Some tickets for the commemorative trip are still available at €29. These may be purchasedthrough the Iarnrod Eireann Travel Centre, 35 Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1. Telephone -1-7034070. Payment may be made by credit card, cheque or cash.

All proceeds go to the international Railway Children charity whose projects all over the world rescue young children sleeping rough in stations from poverty, abuse and exploitation.
