CRISIS!!!! HELP

    Hi

I’m a complete non-techie who has somehow been put ‘in charge’ of our office network. We have various client PCs linked to a Small Business Server running Windows NT.

    Now – here’s the problem

This morning, a directory stored on the (partitioned) hard-drive on the server was accidentally deleted from a client PC, therefore the deleted directory/files did not appear in a recycle-bin on the server or the client PC.

I remember from my dim and distant days on Windows 3.x being able to run UNDELETE from DOS, and being able to recover lost files. However, this does not appear to be anywhere in NT.

Does anyone know how to track down lost files in these circumstances? Help would be gratefully received!

PS. Re: Backups – I know, I know – I’ll learn my lesson from now on!

Firstly, There is a Net/Comms or Technology board where you would probably get a FAR Greater response to your question,

As for Undelete, Unfortunatly I find it very unlikely that you will be able to use it, as its for FAT16 Partitions (I think), and I dont think NTFS Uses it.

The Client PC Should not have had access to it in the first place.

What Files were they? Were they documents, or system files ? ..

I fear that if they are documents you might not have much luck in recovering them...

however, if they are System Files, you may be able to re-extract the specific files from the WinNT Server CDROM ..

Anyway, Give us more info smile.gif

Having had your style of job title for many a year, I'm sorry but I think you are screwed (or maybe its the deleter). However, check if someone accidently moved the directory to another directory.

The LAN comprised 5 PCs and one laptop using one of the PCs as both a client and file server. One of the PCs was used as a 'public' machine - it was the only one with e-mail, specialist applications & ZIP drive.

My protocol was to do a daily back-up to a lap-top and a rolling series of weekly back-ups to the d:\ drive on five machines, one for each day of the week. It was also a great searchable database to see how much work people were actually doing (lik esomeone might not have a save on their projects for a whole week - hmmm 12 click and P45).

Clients should never be allowed delete files - its an admin job. Not sure how you stop them though. Laziness on their behalf tended to work fine for me.

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.
