Try the Irish Canoe Union http://www.irishcanoeunion.com/ as a start, otherwise all canoe clubs are only delighted to get new members. Where are you based?

South-East, was thinking of taking it up as a hobby and just need to know where/how to get started.

Blessington Lakes down in Wicklow could be worth a look too. The Adventure Centre there run classes and you can join open canoeing sessions too just to try it out.

After you've been at it a while you could look into picking up some kit for yourself - Once you know what style you enjoy etc.

    Cheers,

    Gil

yeah that'd be the idea alright, get a couple of lessons, find out a bit about it, then get a bit of kit. blessington lakes, I'll check it out. Anyone know anywhere else, even a little bit further south?

You could try tiglin (http://www.tiglin.com/). Further south than blessington but still based in Wicklow. I'm not sure where they run their courses though but I'd imagine its in Wicklow.

Do you mind me asking how old you are? The reason is that Sea Scouts may operate in your area - Many are based mainly around canoeing activities and basic sailing. If you're 15-23 or so you would be able to join as a Venture/r scout and if you're interested, you could also look at becoming an assistant leader.

    Just a thought!

does anybody know of anywhere in Ireland you can buy a canoe?
    I don't mind if it's used.

looking for a 3-4 seater. Preferably wooden, but light enough.
    For general lake/river use... recreational.

    Thanks.

i eventually found an excellent website www.seapaddling.com and have just completed my ICU level 2 cert. The guy who runs this is based down in the South-East, near Tramore/Waterford. Was an absolutely excellent two days spent kayaking on the sea and now I'm definetely going to take it further, will now look into joining a club/group who either kayak or canoe. Anyone based in South-East and interested in sea kayaking should definetely check it out.
