BBC Radio 1 is by far the best station around with no commercial remit its specialist shows are the best with its commitment to indie, rock and dance unparalleled anywhere. Its being broadcast coast to coast in the states from next month so it should shake up the scene there.

Now that I wasn't aware of...a lot of it's shows already have a big net following stateside, but actual broadcasts would reach a huge audience, and having heard a bit of what US radio had to offer, it wouldn't have an awful lot of competiton. US stations tend to be niche broadcasters; it's rare you'll get rock played alongside RnB or hiphop, and I rarely if ever heard non-commercial dance on the wireless over there...lots of country though :D They all seem to pick a genre and ru with it...since they depnd solely on advertising revenue, that's not so surprising.

Got a link to the story/release about ths move?

Ray Darcy is a smarmy bastard these days. I thought he was ok a while ago but now I can't just stand him. He reads some text about himself like 'Hi Ray, you're a sex machine' and then he says 'Oh I don't know about that' and pretends to get all embarassed. His head is going to be too fat soon to get into the studios.

For someone with real wit and humour, listen to Sean Moncrief on Newstalk at 2:30 Monday to Friday. He show also involves listeners texts but in a much better way, none of this "I love you {insert moronic presenters name here}" texts.

    That's a bit harsh.

I only started to listen to his show because when I started in my current job 5 years ago it was either that or Gerry "I know all there is to know about women's problems" Ryan and I can't stand Ryan.

I like the style of Ray's show, light hearted, easy listening, that appeals to most. Perfect to have on in the background while working. I agree that the playlist is a bit too commercial at times, but what do you expect, it's commercial radio, and he can't be blamed for that.

Did anybody see his interview on the Miriam O'Callaghan show on Saturday? I caught most of it. But did did I hear correctly that he's actually going out with Jenny now?

Yeah, I heard that too, was a bit of a surprise.

    Its a great show btw!

Texting in is wrong. The vast mass of humanity are halfwits, which is why they don't have their own radio shows. Ergo, why the hell should we be subjected to their imbecilic views?

Well in all fairness mate, the same could be said about you after that reply.

Actually, I contradicted myself. Halfwits do have their own radio shows, e.g. Ray D'Arcy.

    As you were.

ray darcy show is great. anyone hear them touring around ire in a camper van at the mo? so funny. some really funny people on the show today. esp the laughing kid :D

I think the word we're looking for to describe the show is 'whimsical' and by its very nature it'll appeal to some and others'll hate it. Meself, I'm in the former camp and found that back-in-the-day when i could listen to his show in the office, it cheered me up no end. There's no shortage (pun intended) of him having the mickey taken, and everybody else on the show is fair game, but unlike say what Chris Evans used to do with a rentamob gang of lackeys, his sidekicks are as essential to the show as he is.

As indeed are the listeners. Somebody made the comment about 'who cares about texters' and ordinarily I'd agree. F'r instance when I see those polls on the news 'Tell Us What You Think of the Bombings' etc - well like ****ing DUHHH! - I feel an urge to put the aul size nines thru the telly/radio, but in the case of this particular show it seems to work.

You're messing with my perception of reality. On the one hand quoting "Exile on Main Street" and on the other listening to Rat Arsey. Does not compute... :p

Its usually a fun show, but they've really pushed the boundaries of taste this week with Mairead puking on Tuesday (while milking a cow!) and Jenny puking this morning while emptying the sewage from the camper van....

And lilly81, I agree, that kid was hilarious! :):)

Like I say laddie, whimsy, innit!!! :D

like so many other things, it boils down to 'what are the alternatives'? Leaving aside the 'Listen to a cd/mp3 player' and assuming you HAVE to listen to something, my own pref is that D'arcy is less objectionable, by a country mile, than the opposition - if the market you're in is 'bit o'chat, bit o'music, bit o'craic'.

Ryan Mk1 (Gerry) just annoys me, and has done since the inception of his show all those years ago
Ryan Mk2 is good, I suppose, but I find the 'young fogey' schtick a tad wearing.

Do not, upon pain of death, start me on local radio. Paul pi$$ing Claffey on MWR, with the fella that does the weather forecase based upon sheep droppings, or something...

Lyric is one of the less objectionable choices

I like it in small doses, used to listen to it every morning while working last summer and I just got bored of it. Ear it every now and again these days and its still very funny.

Ray plays a song a lot and I like it, but I can't for the life of me remember the artist or the name! Any chance anyone knows it? It's kinda old fashioned sound, kinda quirky, got a very pop guitar rift at the beginning and its starts off with the lyrics: "can we change the subject, can we change the subject now?", kinda sounds more like the guy is talking than singing. Its a male singer by the way and I think the chorus is "oh, we were doing it all so well...". I'd love it if anybody could help out.

    Cheers!

I think the song you are talking about is Missed the Boat by Modest Mouse. Its quite a cool track alright.

The lyrics (apart from the chorus) from the song descrbed above sounds like Missed the Boat by Modest Mouse alright. But Old fasioned sound is waaayy off the mark.

Coincidentally, did anyone here about the guys in tralee that tried their best to ruin harry Potter for the people waiting outside Easons?

That was me and my friends.

Fred Weasley, Mad Eye Moody, Hedwig die.

Hagrid survives. Harry dies but comes back to life.
