Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Experiencing Access Difficulties

I posted to the ICDG list recently reporting access problems and was asked to post more info here.

From my own observations:
- The URL http://www.boards.ie/icdg/ never works for me
- The URL http://www.boards.ie/icdg/index.html also rarely works for me
- The link to the ICDG from the right-hand side of the boards.ie homepage links to this URL and, as such, rarely works for me
- The link to the "Digital Satellite" community from the home page actually works fine every time.
- I can access the www.boards.ie URL fine nearly every time.

This implies to me (total non-techie) that the problem is at the boards.ie end rather than mine and that it is not due to downtime but rather due to configuration?

I was asked to run the "tracert www.boards.ie command and post the results. Here they are:

Tracing route to www.boards.ie [216.247.239.48]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 * * * Request timed out.
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
6 * * * Request timed out.
7 * * * Request timed out.

etc, etc, etc till it hits 30. This is depite the fact that I can actually access the homepage URL simultaneously.

Any words of wisdom out there to help solve this??

Mark.

try adding some more of your own system configuration.
are you in work/home?
which isp?
connection?
system type?
etc

Um. Ok. After looking at that traceroute for about 0.02 seconds I think we can rule out any problem with Boards.ie.

You arent even getting a response from your local isp when you try to trace the route to boards.ie. This could be for many different reasons but your local helpful network admin should be able to tell you (he'll want to see that traceroute too, if he's worth his salt he'll either know immediately or he'll be very concerned.)

This is definitely a localise problem to Webfactory, could be being firewalled (Boards is very popular with workers and not
with management) or it could be a local DNS issue (which I doubt because its resolves boards.ie correctly at the top).

What a traceroute should look like is this:
1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.0.3
2 50 ms 40 ms 51 ms 194.125.145.171
3 812 ms 721 ms 1331 ms 194.125.145.107
4 50 ms 50 ms 50 ms 194.125.145.10
5 190 ms 70 ms 141 ms 159.134.192.50
6 50 ms 50 ms 51 ms 146.188.34.185
7 50 ms 50 ms 41 ms ge3-0.cr2.dub2.gbb.uk.uu.net [158.43.152.2]
8 60 ms 191 ms 70 ms so3-1-1.tr2.lnd2.alter.net [158.43.253.9]
9 391 ms 581 ms 1101 ms so-6-0-0.IR1.DCA4.Alter.Net [146.188.8.169]
10 * 140 ms 141 ms so-0-0-0.IR1.DCA6.Alter.Net [146.188.13.33]
11 150 ms 140 ms 130 ms 0.so-0-0-0.TR1.DCA6.ALTER.NET [152.63.9.210]
12 150 ms 240 ms 150 ms 121.at-5-0-0.TR1.ATL5.ALTER.NET [152.63.0.101]
13 821 ms 451 ms 410 ms 0.so-7-0-0.XR1.ATL5.ALTER.NET [152.63.9.230]
14 531 ms 270 ms 271 ms 193.ATM7-0.GW5.ATL5.ALTER.NET [152.63.82.17]
15 150 ms 160 ms 271 ms interland1-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.255.13
4]
16 151 ms 160 ms 190 ms 64.224.0.104
17 1351 ms 1382 ms 892 ms news.boards.ie [216.247.239.48]

Its traces the ping time to each node on the route to the host (notice that the first hop responds in less then 10 milliseconds, thats cos its our gateway on our lan).

Then we get the usual crappy indigo-eircom connections at 5pm and again crossing the atlantic via Alter.net (who are always swamped).

Yours is timing out before it leaves your lan and you need to get that looked at by a network admin as I've said as its either being blocked or is a symptom of a bigger problem.

Sorry, but its not boards.ie's fault.

DeV.
