    This from Tom Payne
That said, now is the time for progressives to lead and not just wait for Bush. It is imperative that the narrative that emerges from the devastation in London is not one that plays into the hands of Al Qaeda or into the hands of the neocons, as happened after 9/11.

    Don't Repeat Past Mistakes

That post-9/11 narrative said that America was attacked because "they hate our freedoms." This turned out to be the first of many lies that paved the way to our current strategic disaster. In fact, America was attacked because Al Qaeda hated our policies in the Middle East and, given their relative inability to strike effectively at either the Saudi or Israeli governments—their main enemies—they struck at those governments' primary sponsor, the United States.

Yet that simple narrative, "because they hate our freedoms," constructed carefully by the White House communications team, laid the foundation for the war on Iraq and the expansion of the war on terrorism well beyond the justifiable and proportionate retaliation on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan...

    Why London? Why Now?

For the moment, I am assuming this was the work of Al Qaeda. If that is the case, the timing of the attack is significant. The G8 Summit has, as its primary focus, two issues that could strike at the heart of Islamic extremism by draining the swamp: climate change and poverty.

Addressing climate change requires radically improving transportation fuel efficiency and transitioning off fossil fuels as a source of energy. To the extent that the United States and the rest of the world adopts sensible climate change policies, the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf diminishes and America has more room to promote real democratic and economic reform in the region. Al Qaeda's strategy, however, requires American dependence on Persian Gulf energy, to ensure that America continues to wage war to protect its energy supply....

Addressing poverty in the developing world, particularly in Africa, also hurts Al Qaeda's side. To the extent that America is seen as an imperial aggressor, planting strings of military bases to protect access to economic resources, the Al Qaeda propaganda is reinforced. Significant progress on global poverty, however, also "drains the swamp" of the recruits, resources, territory and cooperation that these groups need to operate.

But the decisions on what would come out of Gleneagles were made well before the summit meeting. Changing those decisions would be diplomatically quite difficult. Odds are that the terrorists knew this. Therefore the attacks are about changing the direction of the momentum, about destroying the narrative of progress and hope that the G8 Summit has produced. The terrorists want to stop the climate change and poverty focus of the international community and bring it back to terrorism. Ultimately, Al Qaeda wants to keep the West distracted from advancing the policies that will deal a heavy blow to Islamic extremism.

Facinating but a bit mad Ted.

    Mike.

LONDON, July 11, 2005 -- Some informed British sources believe that the recent London Transport bombings may have been the work of far right-wing British terrorists hoping to stir up tensions with the nation's large Muslim population. There are several reasons for this belief. One is that GCHQ and MI-5 intercepts of the communications of Muslim groups in Britain and abroad -- groups suspected of ties to militants -- revealed that targeted individuals and organizations were genuinely surprised at the London bombings. Another is the statement of former Metropolitan London police commissioner Sir John Stevens that the perpetrators were "almost certainly" British. Although many accused Stevens of stirring up racial tensions, he never referred to British Muslims. British Prime Minister Tony Blair ruled out any probe of the bombings claiming it would "distract" from the investigation.

Although U.S. and some British media were quick to point blame at Muslim terrorists, little has been mentioned about David Copeland who set off a nail bomb in the Admiral Duncan pub on Old Compton Street in London's Soho in April 1999. The bomb killed three and injured 139. Copeland, a 22-year old electrical engineer and native of Hampshire, wanted to start a war against non-whites and homosexuals and believed he was a messenger from God. Copeland had a fascination for Adolf Hitler and dreamt of being an SS commander holding women sex slaves. Copeland was also charged with setting off nail bombs in an Afro-Caribbean neighborhood in Brixton and a Bangladeshi district in Brick Lane. The British police dismissed a claim of responsibilty for the Soho bombing by a fascist group called the White Wolves, emphasizing that Copeland acted alone. It is also significant that when he planned his terrorist bombings, Copeland worked as an electrician on the London Underground's Jubilee Line extension project. Copeland was sentenced to six life terms in prison for the bombings.

There are reports that some members of British law enforcement and intelligence maintain a liaison with British fascist groups who are mainly centered in the Kentish Town neighborhood of north London, a neighborhood rife with Nazi posters, stickers, and graffiti. In addition to Kentish Town, Roetherhithe and Eltham in southeast London are bevies of fascist activities. British fascist groups include the British National Front, National Socialist Movement, and ex-members of Ulster paramilitary loyalist groups. Another fascist group, Combat 18, was established in 1992 as a security force for the National Front. It was later discovered that MI-5 had infiltrated Combat 18 to slip informants into loyalist paramilitary cells in Northern Ireland.

Informed obsevers also point to the David Tovey case. In 2002, police searched Tovey's Oxfordshire home in an investigation to find the source of a spate of racist graffiti. According to The Guardian, police discovered much more than spray paint cans in Tovey's home: an arsenal of weapons (including a Baikal pistol with silencer), explosives (including PE4 plastic explosive, which is used by the British Army), bomb making equipment, NATO body armor, maps where mosques were located, British National Front literature, and license plate numbers of African and Asian individuals. Police learned that Tovey was involved in a right-wing gang that was placing anti-white graffiti in public toilets in Warwickshire and Oxfordshire. As with Copeland, police said they determined Tovey was a loner.

On July 12, The Times of London revealed that the explosives used in the London Transport bombings were military-grade explosives and investigators emphasized they believed the bombers were British and worked in small cells.

The belief that British right-wing terrorists may have carried out the London train bombings coincides with a major Italian investigation of ties between far-right Italian groups, Italian law enforcement personnel, U.S. Defense Department covert operations agents, and Jihadist terrorists.

Lots more loony left conspiracy stuff here- http://bellaciao.org/en/

I heard Roman Abramovich was behind the whole thing.

Perhaps it was a publicity stunt to promote the launch of a book about a terrorist attack in London

    Hrm.

Ok, current investigation trying to identify bombers handlers leads to a top CIA official. Of couse, we dont find this out, instead...
This direction of the investigation hits a dead end the media is used as a tool to revert back to concentrating on the bombers themselves adn some untouchable, untraceable handler in the Afgan/Pakistan hills :)

Sky news does lots of pieces on new community initiatives sponsored by the government to address the thoughts fears and political views of young muslim teenagers in deprived areas.
Lots of young teenagers from other deprived backgrounds burn lots of mosques. And torment those of Pakistani origin.
Riots in Britain. Sky news is there.

Muslim families begin to leave Britain and come to mainland Europe & ROI.

Islamic fanatics also come to the republic of Ireland, where the police dont pay any attention to them, so long as their tax and insurance is up to date.

Blair is back on form after being dragged back into the war on a state of mind.
Identity cards are a go-go. More fear, more bombs.

Blair eventually gets thrown out of government, and joins the actors academy, finally realising his true calling.

    Hey it could happen. :)

Trying to find the blog again where they mention that the bombers were setup, but here is where they were basing the evidence on...

    From Sunday Times
In an interview with the Arabic Al-Jazeera television channel the day after the bombings, Al-Siba’i claimed Tony Blair would “pay the price” for the “grave error” of claiming the attacks were the work of Islamists before the completion of the police investigation.

He claimed the bombings could have been the work of Zionist Americans or another western country hostile to Britain. His comments echo those of other Islamic clerics, several of whom in Pakistan claimed the real perpetrators came from countries unhappy that Britain will host the 2012 Olympics.

AFAIK The explosive used was acetone based and far too unstable for military use.
