I wouldn't vote for any of them, they're all decrepid old crap that's totally outdated and no longer up to the task (sorry Fred). And no ZZ Top, no AC/DC? No Jamiroquai, no Cardigans? Top driving songs my arse. I love the show, but those guys are so trapped in the past they should really be buying caravans, not blowing them up.

BTW, I challenge everyone in the Motors forum to go and download the soundtrack to Miami Vice right this very minute, and then drive their car without imagining that they're powering a speedboat down a crystal clear body of water somewhere, with an incredibly badly-dressed black man* at your side and some kind of large gun in your free hand.

Now that's a driving song. Sort of. :)

*Or white, I'm just playing the numbers here.

There are too many "Crazy Dutch Guys" on this thread!

    Highway Star as I'm a Purple-Head myself.

The songs above are not really that good, they are a bit past their sale-by-date but the best would be ummmmm born to be wild. I'd prefer lots of other songs over that but out of the above choices......

    2 4 6 8 Motorway - Tom Robinson Band

    Meatloaf from above list

    Seven Worlds will Collide

    Steppenwolf: Born to be Wild
Okay, this is going to make me look really, really sad and really, really old to a lot of people here, I know, but I'm going to come out of the closet and admit that I actually own.............

both 'Bat Out Of Hell' and 'Bat Out Of Hell II - Back Into Hell'!

Yes, I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a Meat Loaf fan. But only really of the stuff he collaborated with Jim Steinman on. Most of the rest isn't great but when you put Steinman and ole' Marvin Lee together, that's where the best comes out, I reckon.

Having said all that.......... I voted for 'Radar Love'! :p Why? Just look at the opening lines:

I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel.
There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel.
It's my baby calling, she says "I need you here".
And it’s half-past four and I’m shifting gear.

You can't get much more of a driving song than that, can you? :D

Though, I have to say, I quite liked 'Highway Star' tonight, especially when it was put to that montage of motor racing clips and crashes. That was actually the first time I heard it, to be honest (I know, mike65, shocking! ;) ). The only Deep Purple tune I really know is 'Smoke On The Water' (another great driving track, in my opinion) but I think I'm going to have to track down a copy of 'Highway Star' now to add to my collection.

The fist songs that spring to mind:
    The Distance - Cake
    My Favourite Game - Cardigans
    Fischerspooner - Emerge

(Of the 5 above, Radar Love)

Ahem, excuse me but might I point you in the direction of Thin Lizzy's 'Live & Dangerous', mike! ;):D Surely one of the greatest, if not the greatest, live album of all time.

Oh Christ, now I must sound like a right old fart to some of the young whippersnappers in here!

I might have to give that album a look alright though, mike. Thanks for the mention.

    Steppenwolf: Born to be Wild
I will have to agree Child In Time is by far their best song.

    Queen: Don't Stop Me Now
    not fair!
I chose one of the options given - if I knew I could pick other songs then I would have:-
Thin Lizzy (too many songs to choose)
    Motorway - Ace of Spades
    Iron Maiden - Aces High
Blondie (loads e.g. Hangin on the telephone)
Slayer - Angel of death, Post Mortem/Reign in Blood
Metallica - loads but esp. Whiplash & Am I evil?

(funny how many of mine are fast paced!)
Oh and Highway star is better than Child Of Mine IMO
oops - work calls (but there *are* loads more!)

The songs suggested by the bbc are okay, but I'd have to go along with kbannon. Fast paced metal songs are the best, why just last night I was zipping down the m1 listening to Ride the lightning. Some* dance songs can suit driving as well.

*My taste in music is very varied

I always remember back in the (good old?) days when I used to do midnight dashes from central Germany to the UK via Belgium with their 3 lane streetlit motorways, that ELO's Secret Messages used to get the speedo creeping up towards the 220km/h mark every time :)

Those songs are the top five from a longer list which was suggested by the visitors to topgear website. Those tracks start in 1968 and end in 1978 All of which shows that the Top Gear core demographic is er "getting on"!
