I'm thinking of dropping my bicycle into somewhere to get serviced. There's nothing particularly bothing me about it, I'd just like it thoroughly checked over by someone with more expertise than me.

Of course, if I bring it in somewhere, they can take my money, clean some dirt off and return it giving it a full bill of health. Or worse, tell me that I need to replace such and such an expensive item. So. Where can I bring my bicycle that people would trust and recommend ? I'll probably go for Cycleways unless anyone has any other comments ?

    Cheers,
    Gav

p.s. If the dude who was cycling from city center through ranelagh, clonskeagh this evening (tuesday) at around 5 is reading this. Ta, you made me (blue specialised trailing you all the way) keep excellent time on my cycle home. hah

Commuting solutions in Rathmines are very trustworthy guys, and from your route description might be reasonably local to you.

Ditto, can endorse Commuting Solutions, very professional and good value. They are open late too, which is a bonus. Cycleways are good but expensive.

On the subject of "clean some dirt off." A proper clean, particularly of the mud/oil combo that builds up on the derailleur, followed by a light oiling, will do wonders for your bike. Possibly more than anything else if as you say "There's nothing particularly bothing me about it." Cleaning is not however something bike shops tend to do; a few offer it as a specific service but it is expensive (as it can be quite labour intensive.) It is something you can do yourself whatever your level of competence; I'd recommend
using Muc Off (purple liquid in a spray bottle) which really does work wonders - they sell this in Commuting Solutions for around €8.

Other than that, if there is nothing bothering you, what exactly do you expect from a service? Tighten brakes, adjust gears etc?

I use Commuting Solutions for most my bike related stuff because they are the local bike shop.
However i do not give them glowing reviews.
I've had a couple of different bikes in there for the odd thing and i've generally found them to be polite, but over-busy (like most bike shops during summer months)
Which means they slack on the work.
I've had a new front derailluer fitted, which they put on a little crooked.
Lastly i brought a bike in for a brake overhaul.
I asked them to replace the brake cables (because they are old and frayed at the ends) but they didn't do that.
They got the brakes to a functional state, and charged me 20euro for it.
I'm reluctant to go in there again.
