With the weather being as good as it is, I've noticed the air conditioning is wheezing along; not quite as sprightly as it used to be.
Takes ages to get cool so I figure the refrigerant needs to be topped up and was wondering where is the best (i.e. cheapest) place to get in done?

    Dublin area?

    Cheers,

    S.S.

by any chance is yours making any sort of a growling sound? My climate control worked one day and then just stopped. It could be gas, but I've to go get it checked out. I know of a place in Limerick, but close to dublin I believe there's a place in Meath does it. Might be called Autoair. Could be wrong though

A refridgeration specialist should be able to regas the unit for you. Try looking up the refridgeration or air conditioning section of your goldenpages.

If that fails ring the local main dealer of your car, they usually farm out the work to a local firm. I know Opel did a couple of years ago when I had a Vectra.

I believe ICE in ranelagh do it for about €150 +VAT (€175).

How old is the car ? Early Aircon systems used R12 which is now illegal (kinda). If this includes your system then it's a costly job to get upgraded (downgraded actually IMO). If you post the make/model/year it might help !

R12 is illegal to import and/or sell within the EU for a number of years - however there are 'drop in' gases that can be used without modifying any part of the system - R409A is a good example.

    More modern systems use R134a

If you need a recharge it means you have a leak - there's not much point topping up the gas for it just to leak out again.

I would suggest if you are in Dublin, phone John Kennealy. His number is in the yellow pages. He comes to you, same day. He did one of our cars yesterday in 10 minutes !

if you thought ur climate control was not as cold as it used to be, would a top up or replacement be advisable?

I just had my car in with MTS in Limerick this morning to get my climate control checked out. It stopped working recently enough and started to growl at me. I thought the pump was shot which was going to cost a fortune to replace.

Yer man in there had a Sun air-conditioning machine specially designed for the job. Took about 20 mins. He put a red and a blue pipe on the service inlets for the a/c system on the car. It went through checking the current level of gas, cleaned the filters in the system, refilled the oil and checked for leaks, then it pumped in new gas. He checked it to see if it worked and that was it. $140 all in. Excellent job, no messing with gas cylinders.

Climate control back in full working order again!

He's based in Limercik city on the old Dublin road in to the city. You pass Frank Hogan's VW/Audi/Merc dealership on your left and just after it is MTS. It's a Campus fuel station and tyre fitters as well. He has the machine in the back there somewhere. Joe is the name of the man that does it. As far as I know Joe only works til 2pm each day so morning time would be your best bet, or phone ahead and see if he's going to be there.
