Can a standard, brand new, out of the box XBox play DVDs without the need to go out and buy extra equipment?? If not, how much would that equipment be?

You need a dvd playback kit.

About 20 quid I'd say, it was 30 when I bought it a year ago, cant imagine it's still that price...
