Bought a 97 Astra - test drove it, etc. and was happy enough to buy. Have just realised that on start-up, the temp gauge heads past the half way point. Havnt driven it since the t-drive as i need to get it taxed/insured tomorrow.

Is this temp. reading a cause for concern? It was boiling hot all day - could that account for it?

A lot of things could account for it.
however, one quick test. Turn on the cabin heater to max and check how hot the air is. if it ifeels close to normal or cold with the gauge in HOT, then I'd suspect the Temp sensor is the problem.

if the engine is indeed very hot, it may be the thermostat, waterpump or clogged radiator.

    Few Qs
How far past the halfway point does the gauge go

Does it go past halfway *instantly* from a cold start. If yes, the gauge or its sensor is faulty. If it takes a few minutes to go past halfway from a cold start the gauge is probably OK

Does it do it from a warm start? If so it may be due to heat soak and the temp will come down in a few seconds as the coolant starts to circulate

Does it do it while stuck in traffic or while driving along or both?
