    Hi,
I've just got a copy of a game that I used to play and enjoy YEARS ago (F29 Retaliator).
When I try to run the game I get the following message:

    "C:RETAL\F29\x.exe
The system cannot open COM1 port requested by the application. Choose "close" to terminate the application."

Any ideas as to how I can fix this so that the game will run?.

    Thanks!.

okay...this might not help since I don't have an original copy of the game, but I looked it up on Dosbox F-29 Retaliator on Dosbox and it shows it has problems with original copy running on Dosbox.

So, I downloaded from Home of the Underdogs the game. A very quick download.

I copied it to C:/Retal folder, and ran Dosbox on it.

The game seemed to run fine enough on my pc.

    Hi Blackjack,

I'll just list what I did and you can compare it yourself

If you have the game from HotU (skip stage one)

1/Download game from Home of the Underdogs
    2/Extract game to C:/Retal
    3/Run Dosbox
4/type the following commands in Dosbox
    4.1 mount c c:/
    4.2 c:
    4.3 cd retal
    4.4 x

The above should work. Please note that the game needs to be in C:/Retal directory

For further Dosbox commands to adjust the game speed, please read the manual as I haven't been using it for a while.

    From the Dosbox readme...
    CTRL-F7 Decrease frameskip.
    CTRL-F8 Increase frameskip.
CTRL-F11 Slow down emulation (Decrease DOSBox Cycles).
CTRL-F12 Speed up emulation (Increase DOSBox Cycles).

These are the default keybindings. They can be changed in the keymapper.
NOTE: Once you increase your DOSBox cycles beyond your computer's maximum
capacity, it will produce the same effect as slowing down the emulation.
This maximum will vary from computer to computer, there is no standard.

Please note that I have only tested the above with a copy of the game obtained from Home of the Underdogs. (and the copy protection seems to have been bypassed as well)

Hope you get it running and have fun.

    Regards Khalim

    Hi Khalim,
I checked the DOSBOX website after posting earlier, and I got the details from there, but thanks a million for your help.

Brings me back playing this game again!.
