    To a certain extend this can be done in Ireland with Esat Business lines as they can be unbundled making them DSL only so you pay no line rental.

    I'm sure if their was enough call for it Smart could most likely do the same very easily as their also LLU, however I couldn't see Eircom wanting to do this as they'd loose their biggest revenue stream by removing line rental from the equation.

    I guess we can only hope. :confused:

    While Vonage accepts that the cost of renting a copper loop should not necessarily be free, it does believe the current £10.50 a month is too high.
    <snip>
    However, BT has rubbished Vonage's appeal claiming it has little grasp of the costs involved in supporting its nation-wide broadband network.

    "We are aware that applications providers that don't contribute to the cost of building and supporting that ever improving broadband network have little appreciation of the economics involved," said a BT spokesman. "Our customers, however, do."

    BTs customers appreciate the economics because they have to pay it :rolleyes:
    As Vonage acknowledge - line rental does have to be paid. Someone has to be paid to maintain the local loop. Or else we'll all have to start taking out LLI (Local Loop Insurance) just in case there's a problem with the cabling :eek:

    From the El Reg article:
    While Vonage accepts that the cost of renting a copper loop should not necessarily be free, it does believe the current £10.50 a month is too high.

    If they think £10.50 per month is too high what would they say to Eircon's €25? :)

    If you look at comregs website discussions on LLU pricing, in the event of a ADSL only (no voice) the full wholesale line rental cost would be passed on, rather than just the incremental cost to the BB provider.

    So it looks like in Ireland it would very little difference if you got a data only line as the line rental would be same as a voice only line.
