"Eircom is set to publish DSL prices" - Irish Times

From Saturday's Irish Times (18th of August):

    --
Eircom is believed ready to publish prices for its digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband internet offering as early as next week. The technology allows huge amounts of data to be transferred down telephone lines at high speeds, enabling access to a range of multimedia services.

The company is not required to publish prices until 28 days before it makes a product available, giving it until September 1st to release its wholesale pricing - as its wholesale product will be available on September 28th.

Eircom is understood to be looking for an amount in the region of €150 (£118) per DSL for its wholesale DSL product. This will be marketed to other carriers. Only Esat/BT is understood to be interested in offering DSL commercially.

Eircom is also expected to offer DSL through its internet service provider companies. DSL enables high-speed, always-on internet access.

The cost of a commercial DSL subscription could be as high as £175 (€222) monthly, said sources, unless Eircom and Esat/BT decide to subsidise subscribers. The cost to Eircom of providing a DSL connection is £2,500 annually, according to industry sources.

A DSL subscription in Britain with BT currently costs consumers about £40 sterling (€63) monthly.

That seems a wee bit pricey; in fact it's considerably more than a wee bit smile.gif

I wonder will Esat/IOL etc. be able to offer it at a lower price, they seem to be a bit keener to see it released than Eircom does.

And nowhere does the article mention installation costs or download limits, but I suppose that information will appear closer to the rollout date.

It would be pretty much useless at those prices AND with download capping.

Well, at least it looks like we *might* be getting some form of broadband at last smile.gif

Well i'll be getting ADSL installed by Eircom on Wednesday. I am also signed up for Esat trials... Eircom won't be too keen to offer ADSL at anything reasonable because then they lose most of their ISDN customers. Unlike Eircom Esat won't have this problem...

the ODTR better set a low price range for ADSL or what is the point in ADSL (for american multi nationals only????)

Yeah I've had it for the last week and I'll be at pains to go back to a 56k modem at the end of September smile.gif

Afaik the Esat trials are tests of an unbundled local loop service; so when they release it they might be able to undercut Eircom smile.gif

That's a commercial DSL line... if I remember correctly, DSL can hit or even exceed 2Mbps connection speed, but us home users will most likely be limited to 256kbps or 512kbps.

Leixlip is in the second group of places on roll out.

DSL can comfortably go up to about 5megs d/s. On a decent line 7.1mb is possible.

DSL can go alot higher than that, but ADSL is limited to 2Mbs Down. (Upper limit)

Hehe. Actually, the opposite is true: most other flavours are limited to about 2mb (HDSL, SDSL), but ADSL is unique in that it works at up to about 7.1mb down with an upstream of about 640k or so (1mb if you're willing to ignore the G.dmt DSL standard)

whatever ADSL is possible of doing Im sure eircon/esat can make a mess of it and introduce packetloss and lag a-go-go smile.gif

I'll believe ADSL for normal pe0ns when I see it!

    lads ,

that price is DOG****, qaurter of that price is ok.

and isn't 2 or 3 megabits ok for all us gamers?

a connection would be ok (for me) if it was ISDN at a set price and unlimited bandwidth

Jayzuz Im movin to England!!!! ****in Eircom rip0ffs. Im in Dire need of a high speed connection from wicklow cuz the best i get is about 20K AND thats on a winmodem meaning its slowed down more by my ****in computer. The only glimpse of anything high speed in wicklow is a car on the road apart from that we are stuck with only the choice of nothing or ISDN which i DONT want because of all the other Much faster services out there. So SCREW eircom and there board members!!

What goes around comes around. ITS SO ****IN TRUE!!!!

118 per monthn ... well i dont know about you lot but im paying about 150 for phone calls at the moment and since its a always on connection that i would be getting i would be happier with that . as long as it dident mean that there was a small max dl limit

what type of world will we live in when there is no world ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭BKtje

    yeah i agree
im willing to pay that as long as the dl limit aint unreasonable.

will still mean we have most expensive DSL in europe by over 100%

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 539 ✭✭✭Yurmasyurda

I heard that there will be two flavours, one with a download limit will be cheaper than the one with no limit.

    Prices are just examples

    Ie.

    download limit 512k (3gb) £100 pm
    no limit 512k £150 pm

Now, can I just ask why in gods name would they bother with the download limit option, it seems pointless (Apart from the little extra cash it would earn them)

Any thoughts, why not just have no limit cable?

mmmm download limit or no download limit for extra cash? it's most obvious what people will go for init?

£1800 per year for 512K? Thats just plain ****ing stupid, they can go **** themselves. You can get a 2M DSL con in the UK for that price.

This is true but it's much better than isdn which costs a phuk load of dosh.

We will eventually catch up with the times uhoh.gif i think.

I heard that the ODTR has forced eircom (hmph, since when have they forced eircom to do anything) to push back the rollout date by 3 months because of those prices.

    anyone care to confirm that?

This is horses**t!! Christ almighty! frown.gif

ah come one. That's stupid, you are restricted, not by your machine/OS but by the actual line quality.

And what does this even have to do with this thread ?

By the time we cath up the rest of Europe will be using another form of technology and stop creating better internet access.
Its only way we'll catch up.

If you happen to be a linux user and are using an external modem then a command like
setserial /dev/ttyS0 spd_hi should have the effect of connecting you @ 56700 no matter what connection speed the program you are using to connect requests yeah?
So when you connect in windows @ 48800 and think that is fast imagine how fast you could be connecting every time with linux and setserial?

i think almost everyone would be happy with a 256k always on connect. at most i'd pay £50 per month (inc VAT)

if i had a 20-30 gig a month dl limit 24/7 access ( and no phone bills )and able to get steady single window dl at 80-100kbs id be kinda happy at paying 100-150 ( wana pay nothn but i know that aint gona happen )

what type of world will we live in when there is no world ?
