Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is my wireless network being hijacked?

    Afternoon all.

I had problems with my ntl bb and tv last week and it has since been sorted. They said that the signal was deteriorating.

Basically, when i hook my desktop directly to the modem I get my normal bb upload nad download speeds according to a bb speed test site.

But when i hook the modem to my wireless router and connect my desktop and laptop, one of the machines(laptop) will have the full connection speed but the other(desktop) will have 10% of its normal download speed but the upload speed is fine.

I have no ecryption on as it caused me problems when i enabled it. But i do have Mac adress filter enabled.

Again, this is only since the ntl was fixed.

Is somebody using my bb connection?

    Cheers
    Wavey

if u go to ur router homepage (depends on router, could b 192.168.1.2) and to the dhcp list u should c a list of the computers connected to it. that will tell u how maany pc's/laptops are runing ur line

Disable SSID broadcast - use a stronger encryption if available - wpa or wpa2 - tkip - aes - i see you have mac filtering but sometimes that ain't enough....

Limit the dhcp to 2 if you only have a desktop and a laptop. prevent the router from assigning to many ip's.

Check the dhcp list on a regular basis - enable incoming and outgoing logging.

I know they're handy and all, I just don't feel comfortable using wireless routers myself, I had my connection hijacked by some asshole two doors up from me so I thought feck this and just bought a regular wire based router. The fecker will literally have to climb through my window and splice wires to rob my broadband from me now!

If you do see someone's Comp name and MAC, what can you do with this information from a legal perspective? Does anyone care (ie external bodies against this or any irish law to be specific) if you have evidence of leechers on your insecure wireless infrastructure?

hmm not quite sure you could always report him to your isp.

Second if you have his mac adress why not just block him, if you have a decent router this should be no problem.

Run netstumbler to see who is in range.
Block whatever mac adress you don't recognize.
make sure you don't block your own.
Start/run CMD / ipconfig /all note your mac and block him and enable the security as i mentioned before,
You shouldn't have to worry about your connection being hijacked if you have it setup correct.
    Remember disable SSID broadcast ;)
