Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there any way to re-install Windows XP Home Edition that doesn't involve a HDD format and install. I'm trying to fix my friend's Inspiron 510m which won't boot up. Just keeps coming up with the BSOD and the error message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".

A reinstall seems to be the easiest way to rectify the matter according to the Dell site.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance

Did it come with a full version of a Windows installer CD or is it a recovery CD that blanks the system? If it's a proper install CD then you can do a repair install on it, which will just fix whatever is wrong and leave everything else in place. If it's one of those stupid recovery discs then it will wipe the disk and re-install from an image. I hate those things.

If you have an install CD yourself I'm sure you could use that, with the Windows key that came with the Dell, to fix the installation on it. That should work.

I have the recovery disk from my own computer which I have been trying to use on it but to actually use the recovery software I have to install it on the comp first which kind of defeats the purpose as if I could boot up the computer I wouldn't need the software.

get a xp disk, boot to it and select the recovery console. when you get into that type " chkdsk /r " and the press the return key and let it do it's magic.

Hard drive is knackered but I managed to get it running to the point where you can access files to back them up. Recovery Console only half worked due to the fact that I couldn't install it due to not being able to boot up the comp in the first place.

Thanks for all the advice guys, problem now solved.
