You said before that Aikido would be useless in an octagon. You also said it wouldnt be any use on the ground. I dont see where you said that aikido wouldnt work against wrestlers and judoka. The primary range of wrestlers and judoka is the standing clinch range. The very same range that Aikido throws take place in. Unless we're talking about standup range where its the preserve of thai boxers and boxer.

Are you saying that aikido doesnt work against other grapplers?

Grapple and clinch... never heard these terms used before in association with Aikido?

Don't see any point in fighting, never have... I can see the point in avoiding fighting! I won't ever challenge anyone to a fight to prove anything to them or myself... Toe to toe with a bloke on the mat... I'd have to be soft in the head. Why would I challenge someone who's already three times plus stronger than me?? I'd lose of course... no question about it. Would I have a chance toe to toe with you (for instance) on the mat if I did MMA?? I don't think so... convince me otherwise!

What percentage of MMA'rs in Ireland are female??

Humour me... if say some night you were out and some guy started mouthing off at you... perhaps takes a swing at you... what would you do??

All this aside... I do find UFC etc very entertaining and watch it all the time :)

Heading to the states on Mon and taking in a week of BJJ while I'm there... any helpful tips for me...?

    Maeve,

In MMA (or any unarmed fight for that matter) there are considered to be 3 ranges.

Standup- The preserve of boxers, kickboxers and thai boxers. Both people are on their feet striking but are not holding each other

Clinch- The preserve of wrestlers and judoka. Both people are on their feet but are in grappling contact with each other. They may be striking (as in knees from the thai clinch)

Ground- The preserve of a little bit of wrestling, some judo, but mainly BJJ.
One or both of the fighters are grounded. This may include striking.

In MMA the aim is to have a decent standard of all three ranges. Depending on the individual and where they train they choose what to focus on. So to test the functionality of aikido, considering you market it as having self defence purposes, you must expose it to either standup or clinch pressure testing (or both). You've stated that Aikido offers no training for the ground range.

To test how well Aikido can perform in the clinch range then a good idea is to get a judoka or wrestler of equal attributes and size (to keep things fair) and try and see how well you can perform aikido techniques against full resistance.

To test how well Aikido can perform in the standup range then get a boxer or thai boxer to try and hit you a lot. You'll learn quickly what works and what doesnt.

Now Aikido is all about starting from out of contact (most of the time) and entering contact and getting body position on someone. So... get an MMA person to hit and clinch you and see how you perform against this.
Would I have a chance toe to toe with you (for instance) on the mat if I did MMA??
No. There are weight divisions in most combat sports for a reason. Someone with more skill and more strength will always win. FACT. But a certain 17 yr old girl who must weigh in at around 55/60 kg tends to kick my 88kg ass a lot of the time when we roll together.
What percentage of MMA'rs in Ireland are female??
No idea. But there are some. And pound for pound theyd give me a run for my money any day of the week. Suzie, though I've never rolled with me, would no doubt school me. There have been a few girls competing at the MMA League and a few at the National Submission Championships. Worldwide there are some excellent MMA ladies. Erica Montoya for example is an excellent jiu jitsu fighter!
Humour me... if say some night you were out and some guy started mouthing off at you... perhaps takes a swing at you... what would you do??

Mouthing off? Walk off and get garlic and cheese chips in ricks!

Take a swing at me? No idea. Maybe get punched in the face. Maybe punch him. Maybe maybe maybe.

Enjoy yourself. And if they have a beginners MMA or Vale Tudo have a bash. See what its all about.

have a blast! :) .....if you enjoy it you should drop down to my gym sometime and roll with D or suzi, both technical (female) blue belts and will give you a real eye opener as to what is realistic and not realistic for women to do in a ground grappling scenario (the range where the scariest side of female self defence happens)

Thats why clean breaks away from the original group is sometimes needed to further your own development in the direction that you feel most suits your needs.

Leaving on good friendly terms should soften the shock.
You're right of course, I just didn't have enough cop on to do that when I should have!

I'm sure that you could bring alot of eye opening experience to TKD practitioners and find easy ways of getting them to relate to the methods you use now.

And I don't think you would be on your own!

    Colum,

At last....so with all our training etc... we would do exactly the same thing if faced with a real situation... except I'd probably go get a quarter pounder with cheese and chips :)

I'm 5'7 and just under 12 stone (about 77 kilos, I think) and been told I'm pretty strong... last week in BJJ I trained with a guy who was about 18 stone+ ... we started side mount all his weight on me... I was totally squashed.

It's just BJJ in the states this time, but I'll try MMA when I get back for the craic.

    John,

Thanks, I will drop over in September, have been meaning to go for a while, but I'm miles away in Santry. Ok if I drop you a pm when I get back for class info?

My eyes are already wide open as far as BJJ and defence against rape and sexual assault go. I've been teaching women's self defence for about 2 years and though it's not style specific we teach some ground stuff which comes directly from BJJ.

Clive.... a real mean??? looks like I have you at spelling

Don't be encouraging me, I've caused enough trouble already!!! :D
In fairness though, I think most TKD people are quiet happy training they way they train.
