What one film must an educated human watch in their lifetime?

Doesn't necessarily have to have been a big hit, but must have had an impact on the film world and influenced many afterwards.

I'd say Annie Hall - Woody Allen.

Hilarious, smart, philosophical and original. Recycled scenes still appearing today.

    Any thoughts???

I dont know but it sounds as if he started the thread for a discussion rather than suggestions? Anyway sorry to be horribly predictable but Id have to say citizen Kane. Love it or hate it you cant deny its impact on the movie world.

Another must see for anyone interested in film imo has to be ingmar bergmans seventh seal.

Yeah, the defining boards movie list. I was just trying to help the guy by directing him to a thread with loads of suggestions, sorry though, didn't think that it might have been started to discuss these films instead of just listing.

I'd have to go with Twelve Monkeys though. Pretty underrated film.

Brazil. I don't know about impact or influence, but it's definitely unique and well made.

Ever see City of God? Good show. That and The Butterfly Effect, two films I've seen recently enough that I liked.

Fantastic film. Wasn't City of Men the program though? I think Unforgiven is a must-see. It provokes awareness and strong emotion on the topic of death and the act of killing so well. But I can't think of a film that challenges the mind intellectually.

Cross of Iron because its a unique war movie. Most war movies up until then imo where all American action hero movies (still great to watch though).

Oh I'd add Casino in there as well.

    Great film.

I'd say Born on the 4th of July and Platoon as two films that really looked at the reality of war and how it effected the troops.

A personal favourite of mine: Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.

people should check out "f for fake" as well. Its an orson welles, well I dont know what youd call it, about trickery, deceit and forgey. Its recently been released on a special edition dvd by criterion packed full of fascinating extras. Pricey but its worth it.

    Heres the imdb link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072962/

Oh, and Fargo. Fantastic film. True Romance is quite excellent aswell. Also try Clerks. And Pulp Fiction. But who hasn't seen that.

Fargo is amazing, the bleakest film I've ever seen, but still incredibly gripping and funny too. Buscemi = legend. That and Lebowski are Coens best, I reckon.
