I've heard that it is possible to bott up into linux straight from CD, and I was wondering if any sort of installation is required (software..partitioning of a linux drive..etc) and how versitile is it when used this way?

yes, you can boot linux off a bootable CD..
most new distribution cd's for linux are bootable, try booting off the CD, there is normally a setup program that starts, but you can normally get access to a shell...

its useful when you just want to use a basic linux program (eg. linux fdisk), without having to install linux/repartition drives

As long as you know how to change your bios to boot from the CD first there should be no problem.
