I started thinking about this because I watched The Richard Nixon Assassination the other night. I had heard that this was an excellent movie and a must see.
Im not sure if this qualifies as a great movie... but it got great reviews etc....

I was shifting in my seat and just couldnt relax the whole way through it... it was horrible... he bugged the hell out of me, I got up to leave a few times then convinced myself to give it another go.... just got worse.

Gotta agree I hate LOTR with a passion. I was bored to death watching it.
Wouldnt go anywhere near that pile of rubbish again

    Sideways - soooooo depressing

I agree The Assassination of Richard Nixon is not great - just okay.
Donnie Darko - as far as I can remember a wormhole was used to "explain" everything. I guess people are rating stuff relative to the other junk that is being produced these days - so average becomes great.

Spoiler that shacko, might ruin it for some

For me, I'd have to say Thin Red Line. I only kept watching it because there were ads for it at Christmas one year, and they kept playing this same bit where this guy (Nick Nolte?...not sure, looks like him) says something almost unintelligble, and it bugged the hell outta me for some reason, only when i watched the film did i realise he was saying "HIGH GROUND BY NIGHTFALL!!"

I have to admit, i did not take to The Godfather.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭CerebralCortex

I hate Kill Bill volumn 1+2- 1) It is so boring
    2) I feel it was only popular because of Quentin Tarrantino's rep imho.
I really was poor and when I ask most people why they thought it was so good they give such a weak and vague reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Braveheart for me too.....just, too long..I don't really go for those epic battle-type films. That's why I found Troy poor enough as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,958 ✭✭✭Chad ghostal

Ok, you people are all officially crazy (apart from the people who i agree with)..
gladiator was/is not a "great" movie,
    it sucks.. big time..
    its painful to sit through

I cannot get to the end of Heat, it's too long for me

and I hate Casino, it is way too long and it gets incredibly **** in the second half

Intermission - very poor. Fell short of greatness by the width of the grand canyon. Should have been much more than it was.
Forrest Gump - Damn, I thought I was alone in disliking that movie. Schmaltzy, America-Is-Great, Dumb-Guy-Does-Really-Well-For-Himself, bunch of arse of a movie.
Donnie Darko - Unoriginal. Badly written. Badly acted. Not entertaining. Pure crap. And no, it's not the fact that, as many people have told me, I "didn't get it". I did get it, and I didn't like it.

And probably the most controversial of my choices... the movie that has so often been voted the #1 movie of all time:
The Godfather (Parts 1, 2 or 3): Boring. I've nothing against gangster or mafia based movies - in fact I've enjoyed plenty of them in my time. I just had no time for these uninteresting and boring movies that always seemed far to thin on interesting story/plot to hold my attention. There's only so much of Marlon Brando with his mouth full of golf balls I can take... What's that Marlon? You're going to make me an offer I can't refuse? You going to offer to p*ss off and never appear on my TV screen again? Oh! Thanks!

how can you say that, I used to not like that film, but I watched it recently and I loved it, it's brilliant, and it shows how much of a good actor Tom is

once again, this was a great film, I thought it was VERY original, the directors cut sucks balls, but the original is great

Ah typical... you could expect that a thread like this would go along the lines of:

<User2> Right. Well I hate these movies and here's why: [names and explains as above]
<User3> IM NOT GOING TO NAME THE POPULAR MOVIES I HATE, I'M JUST GOING TO TELL USER1 AND USER2 WHY THEY'RE WRONG TO HATE THOSE MOVIES COS THEY'RE SO GREAT. I'M NOT GOING TO EXPLAIN WHY, THEY'RE JUST GREAT, RIGHT? GREAT I TELL YOU. HA!

The thread's for people who want to vent about popular movies that they just plain hate. You're bound to disagree with some of them. Live with it.

Lord of the rings-- Over-rated driver..even the book itself is crap...best of all i love how people try to ridicule me by saying i'm small minded and then i remind them that they only read it because they think that by reading it they are on a higher level..then they read someone else's theory of what the book is about and try to present it as their own..pretentious tossers

    not wrong, just misplaced.

I never really liked Goodfellas. something about the look of the film. I loved the Godfather and how the mafia guys all wore suits. it looked classy. but in Goodfellas, something about mafia guys in leather jackets and flares that doesn't really inspire fear in me. I'm sure I'll give it another chance in a couple of years (big of me, eh?) but at the moment, Goodfellas for me is just meh.

    Donnie Darko

As someone else explained, I just found it overly cheap and plain rubbish with poor displays of talent in every department.

    2001

Boring, boring, and adds more boredom for variation.

    Gladiator

Tried make myself like it, purely because everyone was raving about it - didn't like it, at all.

    Fight club

Good film until the last 30 minutes, tired to go somewhere new and unexpected but for me it was just like....what? Gay.

    Kill Bill Vol. 1

I thought this was rubbish. I feel EXACTLY as someone else posted - that it was carried on the back of a fantastic rep. Thought it was over-rated, stupidifed tarentino at best, Vol. 2 was a huge improvement though.

    Re-Animator

Ultra famous shocker gore flick that was banned for years. Got it, watched it....meh. Looks like a typical cheap flick from the 80's, very disappointing.

    Windtalkers

Now I hated this. It's like they tried to make an epic action film out of a war film, with one of the most hatable and out of place soundtracks ever. Every battle scene, this crappy little zingy tune comes in....argh! Very hatable. Loved the idea, loved some of the great locations and epic battlegrounds, HATED Nic Cage in this one, he suited the role about as much as Danny devito would. First opening scene was very good though, gave me hope for the movie, but then it all fell apart...

    The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions

Thought complex of the entire trilogy - CGI = Good movie + $$$

WRONG!! Crap, crap movies. First one was good though.

And who DARED put platoon on their list.....best movie ever, one of my personnal favourites....its got charlie sheen for gods sake...CHARLIE SHEEN!!

crouching tiger hidden dragon...Ive forced myself to watch it about 4 times aswell because i like the genre and everyone loves it.

Someone's already said it but Requiem for a Dream - I just didn't particularly care for them, the mothers story was good but aside from that I didn't particularly care about the other three... besides when you look at it things didn't really turn out that badly for them. It's not like they
died or went crazy or anything, they could well clean themselves up and go on to live healthy and active lives
    - I've seen it on Oprah ;-). It was just one small part of their lives. I just didn't think it was the crushing depressing ending that loads of people seem to believe it was.

Ok, it's a nicely done film, can't complain about the acting, cinematography, dialogue... &c. Ok it's an examination of addicition and that's all well and good but you still need to feel for the characters and to me it was almost clinical in it's dissection, it was missing something... that said I didn't particularly care about the characters in Pi either, I suspect that perhaps Darren Aronofsky's direction just doesn't agree with me...

Have to agree with Thin Red Line. Peotic soldiers, give me a break. At least Saving Private Ryan for all it's faults was exactly what it was supposed to be, a war movie instead of pretentious pap.
I thought Fight Club was pretty average. I think you could make loads of interesting movies but if the explanation is
that the main guy imagined all the interesting stuff
I'm left thinking what a waste.

By the way have we ever had a "Crap Movies - that you like" thread? I'm ashamed to say I'd have a few.

LOTR. They should have left it as a book. The movie was way too long, was all over the place and most of the time it was boring.

Gladiator, Fight Club, Goodfellas and Ben Hur, I could never watch the whole film.

Did watch Gone With The Wind till the end, all 3 hours and 42 minutes of that cack!

Didn't think much of Jerry Maguire or Shakespeare In Love.

I try not to go on what reviews say as I normally never agree with them after seeing a film!

2001 - dull, dull, dull and more dull.

Titanic - boring and badly acted love story on top of good special effects.

ET - I hate this moive so ****ing much.

Close Encounters of the Third kind - apart from the cool tune at the end this movie is about 2 hours to long.

Kil Bil 1 + 2 - lame ass movie from an very over rated director with a lousy actress as the main character.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Didn't really hate it but I have to agree with people here who think RequiemForADream was a waste of time. I read so many positive name-drops for it that I had to check it out. It had the odd good scene/shot in it but on the whole it was just a visual ****-fest as far as I was concened.

The Pianist - insipid characters, no suspense, predictable and crap
Schindler's List - not sure if I hate it because we're all supposed to love it or just because it's not a good or interesting film at all
Forrest Gump - dreadful, awful film that proved once and for all that Tom Hanks is a cúnt.
Star Wars - every one of them is the same, dull runaround
Dr. Strangelove - it's simply not funny
Se7en - could see the end coming from five minutes in, and it was poor even at that stage.
Downfall - see Schindler's List and the Pianist
Blade Runner - oh, make it stop already
All the 3 colours films - just plain don't like them and definitely don't appreciate being made watch them all in one weekend and be constantly reminded how great they are and how wrong I am.

    Hehe, this is fun :D

A lot of films I consider total arse have been already mentioned, but I'm going to mention some of them again:

Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon - somebody please tell me what was so good about this film because I thought it was a biggest pile of sh*te I've ever sat through
Forrest Gump - Tom Hanks. High velocity sniper rifle. Need I say any more?
ET - not enough sick-bags in the world to help me stomach this pile of schmaltzy crap
Titanic - could they not make it sink any faster?
Godfather films - already mentioned as a controversial choice. I found them overlong and boring.
Once Upon a Time in America - see Godfather
2001 - 1960s. Copious quantities of drugs. This is the result.
Shrek - big, green and unfunny

Probably a few more I've forgotten, but these will do for starters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    Re: Reqiuem for a Dream

No, of course it's not ideal but it's not like
their lives are over. Ok it'll be a while for the guy in jail but people can get themselves out of those kinds of situations. And losing an arm? people can live full lives with worse disabilities than that. They've fvcked up their lives for the moment but with hard work they can get them back, they're young and all that. Sure it's easier said than done but the movie is over and I didn't think we were left with any indiciation that they couldn't get it together. Except for the mother, I did really like her story.

Maybe I'm too positive but it really bothered me that these things seemed to be presented as an ending for the characters when they looked more like
just obstacles on the road of life...

Anywhoo... it's just my opinion *shrug* I don't generally like to do the "this movie is sh!te", "this movie is brilliant" thing (except for Jeepers Creepers, man I hated that film). Everyone lives different lives and everyone brings different experiences to a viewing of a film and so on. I think Reqiuem is well made, nicely shot and all that... it's a good film, I just didn't like it, and that's what the thread is about after all :)
