I agree 'Donnie Darko' is a film you need to read into to get and when you have done that you can comment on it.

I enjoyed it but do think it's over-rated. Saying "you don't get it", is incredibly insulting - people have different tastes, which is what enables me to think the "Star Wars" trilogy is the most over-rated movie series of all time and enables others to fanatically dress up in costumes and worship the ground Lucas walks on. Neither opinions are wrong... mine's just more right ;)

Maybe I'm too positive but it really bothered me that these things seemed to be presented as an ending for the characters when they looked more like
just obstacles on the road of life...

    Whut? Lets look at this
She's stooping prostitution to pay her smack habit, or he's trapped in prison, still addicted and sans an arm, and this is minor hiccup in life's meandering road? Everyone finishs the film still addicted, no one is clean, they have been fundamentally damaged by their addiction and yet still held within it's thrall, jennifer connolly ends the film in the foetal position clutching her drugs, and theirs no suggestion any of the other characters are clean, they're still damaged junkies.

It's not that I object to your dislike of the film its that you seem to not understand the imagery and ending. The film ends with everyone still haunted by the same demons and more scared.

Incidently loving the Donnie Darko discection. Yes I got it, I just hated the ending. I understood the ending. I just didn't like it. Okay?

Oh and Sideways was the opposite of depressing. Intelligent warm, funny, and ended on an upbeat note.

I don't think it's supposed to laugh out loud, HA HA HA funny, it's darkly surreal. Also you need to place it, No one had ever (and rarly has it been attempted) to make a funny film about nuclear war. To make it, when Kubrick did, was an astonishing brave and brilliant move. And it has some brillant moments (like sellers with the payphone) marked with some darkly funny bits.

Combined this with the fact that Kubrick wasn't funny.

1st Assistant director, during a break in filming

"Right a guy walks into a bar, and orders......"

    Kubrick
    "What kind of bar"

    1st AD
    "Er.......kinda local tavern"

    Kurbrick
    "what continent"

    1st AD
"Why does it matter, but lets say american"

    Kubrick
"just set the scene, so is it urban, suburban, rural? What?"

    3 hours later............

I didn't like Finding Neverland at all, when I thought I'd love it. In fact, I was pretty sure that it woud be my favourite film of 2004. I was expecting it to be really moving, but I instead found it very uninteresting. No gripping scenes at all. Ah well, such is life.

Yeah another in the growing list of films involving jonny depp modelling characters on people with an unhealthy focus on children.

Why was it not called Finding Neverneverland? Neverland is/was Michael Jackson's house.

    Re: Requiem for a Dream

Hmm.... I guess I don't understand why you don't see my point of view. Yes, the things you say are true... I'm not denying the end of the film...
they are still addicted, they're damaged and they are not clean... fine but they're not dead, their lives are not over. That's just the end of the film, not the end of their lives... We don't see what's happens after the film and I don't see why I should be assuming that everything ends up so awful for them? Why should I throw away hope? Maybe it does end up awful for them maybe she ends up dead in a gutter by the next summer but I don't know that and neither do you...

Personally I thought that the fact that film was split into seasons was showing us that we were only looking at single slices of life for certain people... as well as, I assume, showing us how quickly it all happensed and whatever else anyone wants it to stand for... I would be even more annoyed with this film if I thought that Selby and Aronofsky were trying to tell us that this is addiction for everyone and if you get addicted to heroin your life is over that's it.

Anyway so what exactly is it that I'm not understanding? Can you not accept that I just don't see addicition the same way you do? TBH I'm surprised that you have taken this debate up, we are obviously different people and I took something else from it than you did, is that ok? ;)

I think you're pushing your look by calling any of those "Great films".

    Me? A Bout De Souffle.

I cant think of any Great movies that i hate, can get something out of pretty much anything half decent, but in terms of Big movies theres tonnes. Im only going to say 1 though as i haven't seen it mentioned and just to maximise the impact of how shiit it was that it gets my only big mention.

    *The Village*

Absolutely abysmal. It took them hours to tell a very very very predictable story that could have been told quite sufficiently in 5 minutes.

The "twist" was just what I presumed was the answer all along and assumed that there would be an actual twist at the end.

And as well as that, it was just stupid. Especially "no, we'll send the blind girl alone - her heart will guide her through!" Just stupid watching her scramble through the forrest, accidentally killing the village idiot and climbing over the wall..shes blind! what if there was a giant hole behind the wall?! She's Blind! And has no idea where she's going besides "following the path". Why could one of the elders just not have gone? She's Blind, and they're relying on her to get there and back! She's Blind and they send her alone! She's Blind!

Like in fairness, all credit to blind people, but dont go sending them off randomly into a forrest to find stuff for you without any help when theres no reason whatsoever for it.

Sigh. I came out of that borefest begging for my 108minutes back. Seemed like days i was trapped in there!

    Donnie Darko - Complete rubbish

    Overrated crap

i bored as hell with the movie "eyes wide shut" from kubrick.

I think the test of any "great" movie is whether it stands the test of time or not. How many times have you watched a film you that you always thought was brilliant and suddenly said to yourself "Hey, wait a minute, this is utter ****e!"
I had that feeling with The Pianist but never with Schindler's List, Terminator 2 or A Clockwork Orange. Doesn't matter how many times I see them I always spot something new I hadn't noticed before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

I thought Taxi Driver was shíte. And Scarface is too long. I can watch long movies alright (I love the LOTR trilogy), but I just couldn't sit through this.

Had that feeling a few times. Unforgiven got boring the second time i watched it, same with Star Wars movies. I'll never forget i watched The Longest Day when i was younger, a 60s moview about D-Day, and thinking, it wasn't too bad. Tehn i saw Saving Private Ryan, and when i saw The Longest Day again, i thought it was utter cack.

There's only three things i can watch repetedly and still enjoy: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Shawshank Redmeption and episodes of The Young Ones.

Sin City - altough if you're a twelve year old boy with a hard on and misogyny issues i'm sure you loved it....that or a self loathing paedo.

Any defence of this film beginning with the phrase "Yeh, but if you read the comic..." is atomatically void.

Yeah that must be it....every one of us....not because it was entertaining. Nor did fans love it because it was identical to it's source material.

Four weddings and a Funeral, what a load of rubbish, and Hugh Grant

Bravehart aswell, too long, so inaccurate and so boring.

As someone else said, 2001. I had heard so much about this cinematic masterpiece that I ordered it on VHS in Xtravision (this is quite a while ago). I had to fast forward through most of the film because it was just crap.

Sin City and Hitch-hikers Guide, is anyone calling these great films? I don't know, I thought they were both pretty crap anyway.

    Schindlers List
    Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon
    Titanic
    Fight Club
    Taxi Driver
    Deer Hunter
    Unforgiven

Well, it makes it great to the person who loves porn. You were just bashing the film as if your opinion was fact, and insulting anyone else who enjoyed it.

People have already mentioned and hated on most of the ones I can think of, but I think a few might be new ;)

    Forrest Gump
    LOTR trilogy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Saving Private Ryan
Pirates of the Caribbean (surely not great, but popular)
    Ocean's Eleven (as above)

HATE HATE HATE Austin Powers II and III, the first one was fine but so didn't need to be extended with endless, excrutiating sequels.
Ditto with The Matrix II and III

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭garred

    Apocolypse now
    Midnight Run
    Fight Club
All Batmans (hate comic book films)
    Titanic
Can't think of anymore at the mo.

Oh if by great your going by box office figures, I'd have to add Independance Day.

    Star Wars, Bond films...

I hated "Lost in Translation". It was just boring. Its not realistic, enjoyable, funny, moving or involving, nomatter what people say.
The characters are crap and the acting is very simple... as if its hard to act bored, one look at Coppola's script and you'd be bored enough.

I don't really like Gladiator that much... and I've gone off Saving Private Ryan.
