I know, it's a little sad. I'm used to spending loads of time reading threads and never being able to write back cos it takes so long - it's going to be a big change getting to write back whenever I want :)

And in the spirit of the above post:

I'm just back from Stranger Than Fiction - excellent film. Never thought I'd end up almost crying at a Will Ferrell film. And when I say 'almost', I mean 'actually'.

I wish that I could say that AS is talkin' crazy - but unfortunately that's true. My parents refused to get the internet until now for fear that their sweet little daughters would start getting their kicks out of messed-up porn and end up as godless deviants hooked on non-stop sexual gratification.

Maybe they've just given up the battle...

No AS, it was you who wanted to set up the swinging society. I said that I'd vote for it, purely for the intrigue factor, but wouldn't have any interest in taking part. And I think that led to a whole other discussion...

Officially I'm offended that you think my little sister is the 'porn type'. Unofficially, I think you're right. This is the girl who was very disappointed that her nurse uniform wasn't sexier. Which I think says a lot...

They're putting the big Christmas tree up outside the Bank of Ireland. It makes me want a big tree in College even more. I know College is saying it would cost too much, given what could be spent on research, but, as I always say, a happy researcher is a productive researcher.

I'm sure there are some postgraduates who are generally just tossers, and don't really deserve the money. might be something to look into :)

Post-graduates (researchers at least) do skilled work for barely minimum wage. Post-docs however do exactly the same thing for triple the money

That's the best idea I've heard in a long time. Imagine the epic kind of tree we could have in Front Square. In fact, think of the whole college strewn with decorations.... Great stuff.

europerson was talking about the proposal from last year...
    SF/05-06/ 12 - Campus Christmas Tree

Committee noted a memorandum from the Facilities Officer dated 7th October 2005 enclosing minutes of the Grounds and Gardens Advisory Committee meeting of 7 October. The Committee considered a proposal that had been put to the Grounds and Gardens Committee that a Christmas tree be erected in Front Square the year. A ‘once off’ cost of approximately €10,000 is required to put in place the infrastructure, cabling, equipment etc. to hold a Christmas tree and a tree will cost approximately €1,500. After some discussion Committee agreed to the proposal.

    And after Board saw it...
    SF/05-06/20 - Christmas Tree

The Acting Director of Buildings stated that Board decided against arranging for a Christmas Tree in Front Square this year.

Was talking about it yesterday with someone yesterday too how it really would add to the place. Maybe one of us will make millions and pay for the year-by-year upkeep of such a facility (earmarked solely for that purpose) someday.

I suppose it could be justified financially as an added tourist attraction. "Winter Trinity" they could call it. Then they could take a lot of pictures and photoshop snow into them. The buttery could become santas grotto! ;) (i mean what else is it useful for?). The whole of college with christmas decorations I'm not so much up for, that'd be a bit tacky. But a big-ass litup tree infront of the camponile with various trees around campus with a few white lights on them? That'd be pretty sweet.

That or else throw some lights o'er the campanile...

I'm afraid it would take away from the little Christmas tree made of beakers and flasks in the Cocker lab.

edit: Just noticed this job up on here:

Makes me think of the Simpsons: We work hard, we play hard (cue disco balls and 'everybody dance now').

All the boys could throw their Trin ID cards into a bowl in the centre and the girls could all choose one :D

But seriously: swinging always makes me thing of bored, chubby, unattractive and perhaps most importantly, useless in bed couples, rather than hot exciting sex.

Maybe we need a society to dispel these misconceptions...

Yeah I used to think Firefox was all hype and no substance, but I've been using it since I got wireless broadband on Friday and I like it a lot. Of course anything that enables me to stay on the internet and not leave my room for days at a time is going to be good. I think such things are called 'enablers' in addiction-speak.
