1GB SD Memory Cards: Are they slow?

    Hi,

I've bought a Nikon Coolpix 5900, which came with a 128MB SD memory card. I'm thinking of buying a 512MB or 1GB SD card.

Are 1GB cards generally slower at reading and writing? Can someone recommend a good brand to go for?

The camera manual says that memory cards should be rated at at least 10MB/sec for the video recorder to work properly.

If someone can recommend a cheap US-based Komplett-esque retail website too, (I'm in San Francisco) it would be great.

    Thanks,
    John.

Wooh. AT LEAST 10MB/sec??? That somewhat narrows your options... the cards marked at least "60x" should suit. For an example of a retailer in California with a web presence that stocks a suitable device, what about:

    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4237404

(Outpost.com are the web presence for a crowd called Fry's - they're pretty big in California, I believe)

Just one choice in many... HTH.

[edit]That's a 1GB card - oops! This one should be more than fast enough (133x, should be about double your speed requirements) and is 512MB[/edit]

Great! Thanks a lot, I've ordered the 512MB card and some bargain RAM too off that site.

They are pretty big all the way from Arizona to Seattle.

Fry's to men is like Boots (chemist) is to women - the Mecca of all things electronic. Also try TigerDirect.com - I've ordered off them before, no complaints.

Back on topic - I have a Sandisk 512Mb SD card and I have run movies from it without problem on my PDA. No stutter, lag, nothing. Although it has just occured to me that reading from an SD card is probably faster than writing, hmmmm.

No problem. @tom: Yep - I'm told it's geek porn in there ;)

A friend of mine has a Nikon D1, and he bought the first 1GB CF card he saw - it takes photos fine (no video support), but weird and all as it sounds, when he tried to mount the camera on his PC as a USB drive (DSC?), it wouldn't _read_ the disk properly!!! He had to buy a CF reader, and that worked fine... until then, I wasn't all that convinced by the requirements specified by manufacturers for these things. Afterwards, well...
