Aye, and that memory isn't your dirt cheap 200euro DDR2 either. It's proper server RAM.

I'd be surprised, Chalk, if you had a machine even barely comparable to the boards.ie servers. Those machines would cost quite a few grand to put together.

im just saying that for such a popular site [one of the biggest forums on the planet]
that cant deal with the lucnhtime rush most day,
we could perhaps have a kind of fundraiser specically aimed at getting a more modern server to deal with the larger amount of traffic this site generates.

as the admin have said they are trying to generate money by having a sex forum,
surely most of us couldnt care less about a sex forum and would rather see a specific goal,
in my point a faster server,
that we could somehow aim towards getting.

fair enough ecc ram is ridiculosly expensive, but a 733 P3 is modern in nobodies eyes.

i dont know **** about servers or running websites, lets get that clear.
but if money is needed for bandwith that google ads cant raise,
tell the 50,000 or so members what theyre paying for and maybe theyll contribute more.

but Chalk does kinda have a point about setting a fund raising goal. If ppl knew how much boards costs to run, what expenses are looming (new server?) and what little boards is making (from subs and ads) maybe they'd be motivated/ guilt tripped into donating. Just a thought, but Id say the average poster doesnt realise how much money it actually takes to keep this place up.

jesus im sorry im so ****tarded as that i didnt spot a post from a year ago that seems to suggest that a new server is actually needed to replace what we currently have.

now since the thrad was strated year ago i have two options,
either the server is currently that fancy one and is still slow as hell,
or the server is that old one and we never got the fancy one.

either way i think your right that boards doesnt need anyone donating at all,
instead just call anyone that says a p3 is old a ****tard and have nice little laugh

they might do a bit better to show us exactly where the money was going to encourage people to throw some cash their way.

myself,
if i saw a fundraiser style chart showing either how much was needed to pay this months b/w bill or buy a new server, i would be more likely to contribute since i could see exactly where the money was going.

Chalk, if noone else got what you were saying, I think I did. Thanks for the intention but we are ok at the moment.

The truth is that we arent making loads from the subs and ads but we're hoping to change that soon. We make enough to survive as we are but we need to be planning for the future too. If people wanted to contribute, they should subscribe as all that money goes towards running costs and new equipment. That big beast of a server cost the guts of 4 grand :eek:

If people want to support us they can subscribe or help out (as the moderators do), I dont want to be putting anyone under pressure to donate.
