Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Callely Announces Arrangements for Introduction of Digital Tachographs
    29 July 2005

Mr. Ivor Callely, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Transport today (29 July 2005) announced arrangements for the introduction of digital tachographs in Ireland.

Tachographs are devices fitted to lorries and buses over a certain size, which are used to record drivers' activities, notably driving time. Digital tachographs will record drivers' activities electronically and store them in digital memory rather than on paper which is the position today. These records will be used to enforce European drivers' hours rules (EU Regulation 3820/85). The drivers' hours rules limit the length of time for which drivers covered by the rules can drive and require them to observe minimum rest and break periods.

Minister Callely stated that the Department of Transport will be able to support the use of digital tachographs in Ireland from the 5th August 2005. However, the European Commission recently announced that it considers it reasonable to grant a final period of grace until 31 December 2005 in relation to the mandatory fitting of digital tachographs. This means that Member States may continue to permit the use of analogue tachographs on vehicles registered up until 31 December 2005, including those vehicles registered in the territory of another Member State.

"Accordingly, haulage and bus operators may use digital tachographs after 5th August if they choose to do so. We will be issuing the smart cards for use with digital tachographs to drivers, companies, workshops and enforcement officers. This will enable enforcement staff to continue to check drivers' hours whether vehicles are fitted with the old analogue tachographs or the new digital tachograph devices."

The Minister of State said he will be having further discussions with the industry later in the year regarding the roll out of smart cards to all commerical drivers.

    ENDS
