Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ryanair pilots to sue over curbs on union
    From:The Irish Independent
    Tuesday, 2nd August, 2005

MORE than half of Ryanair's Dublin-based pilots have taken a High Court action against the airline to force the company to negotiate with trade unions.

A summons detailing 12 separate claims has been served on Ryanair by 64 individual pilots and by Impact, the trade union which represents them.

This new High Court case represents a significant escalation of an ongoing row between Ryanair and its Dublin-based pilots. Many of them have been told that they need to be retrained to fly the new 737/800 aircraft, which Ryanair will introduce on all routes next month. Ryanair said it has filed a defence with the court.

At the centre of the dispute are about 65 Dublin-based Ryanair pilots who currently fly the 737-200 aircraft. All of these pilots are members of the Irish Airline Pilots Association, which is a part of Impact.

Last month Michael O'Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, told these pilots that the 737-200s will be phased out next month and that any pilots who do not sign up for retraining will be out of a job. Those who do sign up must agree to pay back the €15,000 cost of retraining if Ryanair is required to negotiate with trade unions within five years. Ryanair has told the first seven pilots due to be retrained that they have until next Friday to sign up to the company's terms.

According to the High Court summons, a copy of which has been seen by the Irish Independent, Impact and the 64 pilots are attempting to secure 12 orders against Ryanair. They want a declaration that it is illegal for Ryanair to attempt to penalise pilots who wish to bargain through a trade union or to offer "financial inducements" to those who don't.

The High Court is also being asked to declare null and void any existing agreement between Ryanair and its employees which seeks to prevent them "carrying on collective bargaining through a trade union".

Impact and the pilots are also asking the court to award damages to compensate for a number of alleged wrongs, including what they call an "unjust attack" on their constitutional rights.

According to documents lodged with the High Court the pilots are looking for protection under the European Convention on Human Rights as well as Irish law and the Constitution.
