Blueface and Irish Broadband woes

IBB have been pretty dreadful lately and obviously when the connection is poor (which is most of the time) the blueface quality is poor... however even when the connection is tolerable (pings fairly stable 0-2% packet loss going to my default gateway) the quality on blueface is quite poor

I ran a trace and noticed that the connection to sip.blueface.ie is routing via London (going from IBB to Level3) - clearly IBB has issues but is this not probably adding latency to the probelm also ?

Anyone else copy this on their traces to blueface - do they route via Level3's UK network too ?

Blueface have an IP allocation via Telecity, who do not peer in Dublin, hence the route around via London.

Below is my tracert from netsource. However I have never found any quality / latency issue with blueface.

When in Houston, Texas earlier this year I used blueface over a cable inter net connection with no problems.

The latency problems you are having are with in Irish Broadband's network. The delay within their network is over ten time that of when it leaves them even though it goes via London rather than just a few Km.

If the one way latency goes above 200ms, it will be hard to hold a normal conversation, without an anoying gaps and both parties starting to talk at the same time.

If you get a chance try blueface from lower latency conection and you will find that it is as good as a normal phone.

Other than asking Irish Broadband to sort out the latency within their net there isn't anything you can do.

    Willie.

The Smart trace time look quite poor. Are you having any problems using blueface's service?

I might have to think twice about moving from netsource to smart even though the are very much cheaper. If it is going to cause problems with VoIP.

BigMoose which mast are you on? OP is on Guinness.

I'm using a local wireless provider in Cork and I ping to blueface at 140-180ms. The call quality is excellent (though there is a little echo from time to time - not enough to annoy though).
I can ping to Skytel at 70ms though so if I do begin to have trouble with my connection to blueface, I can always fall back on Skytel.

Thanks guys - I was fairly sure that it was IBB's problem (quelle surprise!) - just curious about the London issue.

Before IBB went to the dogs, about 6/8 weeks ago for me, Blueface was superb on their network most of the time .. and i've used it on other connections too and it's been brilliant

Oh to get a proper ISP !

Blueface have an IP allocation via Telecity, who do not peer in Dublin, hence the route around via London.

My pings to sup.blueface.ie have halfed since last night. They were 140-160ms, now they are 60-70ms :)

    Has the routing changed?

    run
    tracert sip.blueface.ie

from the command prompt and it'll show the route taken by your packets.
