Each person is different. If you were told 6 weeks then wait for around 6 weeks. They're not professionals for nothing.

they say 6 weeks to everyone... is there any way of knowing?

theyre not professionals if they pierce with a gun.
go along to a decent piercer`s and ask them to change it for you once its settled.
    maybe a week-ten days.

aw, those peopel who pierce with guns tell every one 6 weeks...you should know yourself...when you can kinda move it around and it feels 'loose' and it's not too sore...but if you can't wait just go to a decent piercing studio and they'll change it for you!

Like somebody else said, I wouldn't consider anyone who pierces with a gun a "professional".
I've had numerous piercings done with a gun (simply because it's very cheap, rubbish or not), and I've taken them all out immediately and changed the studs for decents ones (proper gold and silver have proved equally effective).

The studs that are used in guns are badly shaped and often made of nickel (which can cause allergic reactions in many people), and I have found that the piercings just won't heal properly around them.

If you can stomach it, (obviously it's too late now, but in the future) I'd go for changing them immediately, using proper precautions of course (clean hands, sterilised studs, etc.) to something more suitable.
On that note, I have also found that "sleepers" promote healing better than studs do, mainly because they're much easier to keep clean.

kazaam i expect by this stage you have a acquired at least 10 new piercings all in more novel and fun places.. one thing man lay off the gun piercings (wo)man..anything which freakin punches a hole in your ear with a relatively blunt piece of jewellery just aint right.i got my first 3 peircings by gun a long long time ago and it just felt dirty..kind of comaparable to a cheap hooker,..not like i know what a cheap hooker is like, and i most definielty do not know what an expensive hooker is like, and nor do i want to know what either is like... ya get me?
go with the needles...it dont cost that much to get pierced professionally maybe another tenner... and if you are gonna get pierced with a gun and have to buy new jewellery you aint doin yourself any favours.
pop into Celestial Ring..or Bodyshock..or Snakebite..theyll be more than happy ta sort ya out.
enough rambling from me...as ive already said, you are prob smothered in jewellery now..hehe. ps dont get a gun piercing on ur nether regions..man that didnt work out.... :P
all a bit a bit late but nevertheless.....

Another reason not to get your piercing with a gun is because the jewellery used is a different guage to proper body jewellery. i.e. the hole will be too narrow.
Also don't use gold or silver in an unhealed piercing, they are not pure metals. The only metals suitable for unhealed piercings are titanium and EU compliant surgical steel.
i.e. implantanium by Wildcat or EEC Compliant Steel by Coldsteel
These both comply with EU Law which requires that nickel content in parts during epithilization after piercing contain less than 0.05% nickel by mass.
Both gold and silver may contain nickel

put it this way, if you've been pierced with a gun take the jewelry out as soon as possible, guns are dirty and the studs are scrap metal.
If you want a decent piercing go to a decent shop, i.e Body Shock, Snakebite or Metal Morph. Good luck with it.

That's a good point actually. However, it's not very likely that they will contain any amount large enough to do damage. Personally I've never had a problem with either gold or silver and I'm allergic to nickel, but I've probably just been lucky.
