Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

can anyone shed any light on this - it's driving me insane ??

    reinstalled windows 98
on boot up 2 devices had no drivers ( pci communication device and pci multimedia device )
neither was there a modem in the modems section or even a modem section to begin with
got modem name of card and downloaded a new modem driver package
modem installer came up with some rubbish about uninstalling {} or something like that ( didnt work anyway )
tried to add the drivers manually ( update driver ) to either device - neither worked
tried modems control panel to add modem that way - modem appeared in device manager - yet when i tried to query modem then it wouldn't work -
this is the part where i am suspicious - the modem wizzard only gives me a choice of com port 1 to install to - now i thought that 1 and 2 were supposed to be used for mouse and keyboard or something and that normally you put a modem on 4 - does anyone know why i dont get that option ??

last wierd thing that i noticed is that in the sound video and game controlers section there is a device installed called ( voice MODEM serial wave device ) - what is this ??

would really appreicate if someone could help me sort this out - i am getting pretty desperate

To find out the exact hardware used in the modem and sound card use this program
    http://www.voodoofiles.com/11892

This program will directly interrogate the hardware, using this information you can search for drivers which specifically match the chips on the cards.

the voice modem serial wave device is usually the onboard speaker found on some modems.

Windows 98 does not have the drivers for your modem or sound card. The PCi communication device it is finding is your modem and the audio device is your sound card. You need to find out what type they are and install the correct drivers. If its a Branded PC the hadiest way to do this would be to download the drivers from the manufacturers website if you no longer have the system cds that should have come with the pc.

thats normal for modems can also act as an answering machine.

thanks people - got it sorted - yes - it was the incorrect driver - the one i downloaded was ???? even though it was supposed to be for it - eventually i went onto packard bell site and typed in the serial no of the pc - im not a fan of pb but to be fair they have a really good system for keeping track of the pc's that they sell and they had the drivers on there for everything in the exact pc i was fixing - i should have gone there in the first place

daywalker thanks for the link - will try it some other time - seems like a handy piece of kit

    thanks again both of you
