"Etienne charged with armed robbery and attempted murder

Former fringe world title contender Clifford Etienne was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stealing $1,978 from a Florida Boulevard check-cashing business, Baton Rouge police has confirmed.

According to a Police spokesman the 35 year-old ex jail bird, who was wearing a mask, stole the cash at gunpoint. But when the one time contender attempted to leave the premises a number of police were waiting and gave chase. It is then alleged that Etienne tried to steal a car with two children inside but was not able to start it. He then fired at police but the gun failed to go off. Etienne then stole another vehicle that was also occupied by two children and their father. Etienne then attempted to shoot the father but the gun once again jammed. Etienne did manage to drive the car off with the two children still inside but crashed, upon which time police overpowered him and took him into custody.

Etienne, who served years 10 years in prison for robbery, has been charged with two counts of armed robbery, attempted first degree murder, second degree kidnapping and attempted armed robbery. Etienne is presently incarcerated in Parish prison.

Etienne, who last fought on May 14 this year, is best known for his first round loss to Mike Tyson in February 2003. Since his release from prison in 1998 Etienne has fought 35 times, winning 29, losing four and drawing twice.

jaysus  he had just fought nicolai valuev for the wba intercontinental heavyweight title a couple of months ago too.

just shows how quick you can go from fighting for a (sort of) world title to being in a whole lot of trouble

probably at least 20; he has previous convictions and armed robbery and trying to shoot police are frowned upon as a rule.

even though he's lost his last two fights to calvin brock and valuev you'd think that if he was stuck for a couple of grand he could make it in the ring easy enough

    i suppose he's just a nutter

Heh, couldn't believe it when I heard about Etienne's rampage. I was never interested in his boxing career much anyway so it's no great loss in that respect.
