Read in here you cant 3g cards into old phones as the card can damage the phone.

If it's Vodafone, you can put a "3G" SIM in any phone without damaging it (I'm certainly not aware of it being possible to damage an old phone with a new SIM, I use USIMs in all my 2G phones/data cards).

Did they actually give you a new SIM anyway, as these days there is no such thing as a "3G" SIM. All work 2G and 3G. USIMs also work in 2G and 3G phones/data cards.
