When did the censor pass "Salò" and "Baise-moi"?

Over the past couple of days I've seen DVD's of "Salò: le 120 giornate di Sodoma" on sale around town. I also rented "Baise-moi" from my video store. I would have expected a bit of a fuss about this, especially "Salo"-never seen it, just know about its reputation.

I've heard of both of them, but never seen them. I'd say they were both just straight to vid or unrated or something. The new censor, John Kelleher, seems to be taking a pretty liberal approach to sex and stuff anyway (see 9 Songs). I haven't seem them so I can't really comment. What is in them? I think Baise-Moi means "F*ck Me".

    Are they any good?

Salo is pretty bad. ****-eating, child raping kind of stuff if you want to know. All I know is that it was of course banned over here at one stage, and I THINK it was unbanned in the UK in around 2000 cause C4 showed it, and when it was unbanned over there it was still banned here so it must of been unbanned around 2001-2005.

Salo: 120 Days of Sodom is a strange film. A condemnation of fascism by a communist/athiest director (who also did the best film about Christ). Its not much good by all accounts, even if it is "art".

    Glad its not banned though.

Baise Moi is ****. I have it, and its not even a decent film with porn. Its just a plain and simple low budget muck fest. Shocking how its even classed as a movie rather then a porno flick

I liked some things about Salo actually. I never knew there was such a fuss about it - I found it on the shelf in my local videostore lying there just like any other film. I don't recall any child rape either.

I haven't seen Baise-Moi but I've read the book - trashy stuff (as in badly-written even if it was funny in parts).

Well, the youngest people I saw in it were teenagers - wouldn't call them children, though.

I've seen a few of Pasolini's other films like the Decameron. I think Salo has this mythic status because Pasolini was murdered soon after he finished it. Apparently, the Italian police reopened his murder investigation in May. Some people think the higher-ups in Italy were involved.

I don't think they still ban movies anymore.

Italian politics in the 70s makes the worst stuff here look like a vicars tea party. The far right were at work and Mafia practicaly ran the place, not to mention the hard left Red Brigades. Anyone under about 40 would hardly belive the state of the place back then.

oh they do, but they ban more books ayear then films.

    http://www.oasis.gov.ie/culture_and_recreation/arts_and_culture/censorship_in_ireland/censorship_of_films_in_ireland.html

In the2004 report are the number of films certified.
They dont release infomation about number of film banned but of the number
of films what have been certified.

I am sure if you emailed them info@ifco.gov.ie they could tell you if they
    have been certified.
If it has not been certified then it should not be screened or for sale.
neither film shows up in the IFCO online database as being certified.

There is a list somewhere in that website that Thaed already posted. http://www.oasis.gov.ie/culture_and_recreation/arts_and_culture/

Mainly S & M type porno judging by the titles.

I’ve started to notice a lot of videos turning up in shops without the Irish (blue) rating certificate but with the British (red) one. First noticed it in specialist stores like Vibes and Scribes. Now I’m starting to see it at the local video shop as well.

The censor is also allowing himself to be bypassed by adult pornography. Sex shops openly sell porn. I think there is even a warehouse superstore on a Dublin industrial estate!!

In the United Kingdom pornography is rated (R18). Certain things are not permitted. Coercive sexual violence and adult consanguinity (for instance, a woman and her adult daughter, adult twins, adult sisters etc) is not allowed. An R18 certificate is needed in Ireland. But I see very little chance of that happening.

Its ridiculous to ban books and movies from adults. If people don't want to read them, they don't have to. I understand banning child porn and videos of people being raped or something, but other than that, i dont understand.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

    Edit:
I looked at that list. The News of the World is banned in Ireland. And a lot of detective books..
They don't seem to have banned any since 1998 or so.

    http://www.oasis.gov.ie/culture_and_recreation/arts_and_culture/censorship_in_ireland/censorship_of_publications_in_ireland.html
Grounds for banning a books or periodicals in Ireland

Books are prohibited if the Censorship of Publications Board considers them to be indecent or obscene. Periodicals are prohibited if the Censorship of Publications Board considers them to be frequently or usually indecent or obscene. Both books and periodicals may be prohibited if the Board considers that they advocate abortion or ways of carrying out abortions. Periodicals may also be prohibited if the Board is of the opinion that they have given an unduly large proportion of space to matters relating to crime. In practice, however, publications are usually only reported to the Board for obscenity. The Board will measure the literary, scientific or historical merit of the publication. It will take note of its general tenor, the language in which it is written, its likely circulation and readers and anything else it feels is relevant. It may take into account any communication with the author, editor or publisher.

list of publication banned up until 2003

I do know that moast of Poopy Z Brites books are banned
and some of the recently Laurel K Hamiltion books are 'unadvailbile'.
When you ask book store to order them in that is what you are told.
