PHIL Nolan, the chief executive of Eircom, has set his sights on a top job with a leading UK company. Interviewed in a British Sunday newspaper yesterday, Mr Nolan said: "To be chairman of a FTSE company is an obvious ambition."

Mr Nolan has headhunted to lead Eircom in 2001 at a time when he was chief executive of Transco, a gas pipeline business which had been demerged from British Gas. He was appointed by Sir Anthony O'Reilly, who lead the Valentia consortium which acquired Eircom that year.

Speaking of his appointment, Mr Nolan said: "I got headhunted but it's hard to say no to a man like Tony O'Reilly. It was a good cash business with solid cashflow and they (Valentia) believed it could be managed better."

In the interview, which details Mr Nolan's extensive CV, he lists Sir Anthony among a list of mentors which includes Lord Browne of BP, Richard Giordano, the former head of British Gas, and Sir John Parker, chairman of Transco and P&O.

    Bye bye Fidgety then?
