Getting tongue done

I'm thinking of getting my first piercing (tongue) so I had a look around on the Net to get some info bout it but theres a lot of conflicting stuff(geting it done while in college, not til sep)

From what I found, I can't take it out for extended periods of time without the hole closing up, so if I want to hide it from the parents (only be home for the odd weekend) I have to get some clear retainers which do the job? Anyone familiar with doing that/hiding it?

Also, I do judo and it's pretty high contact (mainly falling, no punches/kicks but the odd collision), and as I wouldn't be able to keep it out whilst doing that, would the retainer be pretty safe ye think?
I googled for it & searched couple judo forums, but can't find anyone that has done it, hopefully not because they're all too laid up to post, but because none of them have bothered!

Oh, last but not least, how much should I expect to pay, don't want to get screwed just cos I haven't got one done before.
    Thanks!

no good studio will screw you just for having no piercings...think the price is about 50euro these days...thats what my friend paid the other day anyway and thats the price in the shop i go to...

i hid mine from my parents, so did my sister and brother without putting any retainer in...they know now, but i dont hid the simplier ones anymore, just the big ones i know theyd freak at me for getting done...
use a retainer if you want, but once swelling goes down and you change the bar to a shorter one, they're not so noticeable..unless your sticking it out and playing with it...

dunno what it would be like for judo...i would of said it shouldn't be a problem but i don't know much about judo!!

Fair enough, won't be going home til I get the smaller bar in then!
According to the bmezine thing on aftercare I found a link to in here somewhere, swelling goes down in 3-5days, and shorter barbell in 8-10 days, this match with when you got it done?
Must see if theres some kind of ball made of something other than metal, that you wear at night/(while doing judo, just in case) that won't end up smashing my teeth?!
(and one last stupid question probly, ya don't end up with any kind of lisp right?)
    Thanks again!

you can get balls that aren't made out of metal...just plastic balls...you can buy clear ones too so that it's not overly noticeable...

as for a lisp...anyone I know, including myself have not gotten a lisp and I know someone with it done three times...providing u get a bar that fits nicely, you should be fine..

swelling does go down between 3-5 days and you can change that bar then...i waited for about week and a half-2 weeks before changing mine...

Found on Net: "Avoid alcohol, hot liquids and spicy foods until the area is healed. With tongue piercing healing time is approximately 3 weeks.
Oral contact with other persons should be avoided for several weeks"

    According to http://www.bmezine.com/pierce/articles/ptafter/tongue.html
healing is done in 10-14 days, and to avoid oral anything for that time, no mention of alcohol.

    Just wondering if
    a) It's okay to have alcohol during the healing process?
    b) Okay about the oral stuff during that time too?
    from yer experiences with it?

And thats the last question, I promise! :D

This is due to increased risk of hepatitis. The piercing is a wound in your mouth and if you (open mouth) kissed someone with hepatitis even the smallest amount of blood can be infectious. It is advisable to wait about 6 weeks.

As for the judo you should be fine. How often do you train? Taking your piercing in and out a couple of times a week would slow the healing and cause increased risk of infections. I have my tongue pierced and train in krav maga and it's never been a problem.

One problem with alcohol is that it can thin the blood and make you more likely to bleed. I prefer not to drink either the night before or the day of getting a piercing or tattoo. The same goes for aspirin, take ibuprofen if you want a pain killer.

yup its perfectly fine..i know a good few people that have gotten theirs repierced after taking it out for one reason or another...i'd just mention it to the piercer just before hand so they know...

Train usually 3 times a week, but it'll be nice and slow at the beginning for all the beginners (college club) so I hopefully won't have to take it out at all....

Fair enough, makes sense tbh! Same rule goes for monogamous (sp?) relationship I spose?

If you and you're partner have both been tested for std's including hepatitis B+C and you are both monogamous, and not at risk then it should be fine. (Just be careful to take it slowly and not be too rough while it is tender, for obvious reasons, other wise you will end up making this face  !)

Re: Alcohol. Whatever about any other piercing, lay off the booze a bit when getting your tongue piercing. Aside from thinning the blood, alcohol dehydrates you, which makes your tongue swell. Unlikely to be enough to do serious damage, but enough to add to your post-piercing discomfort.

Ive asked my orthadontist about this before and was advised against it because of all the stuff they need to put in your mouth when your getting braces on/adjusted. :p

suck in some ice and teh swellng should go down a bit...i was eating solids the day i got mine done!!!

I was pretty ok with solid foods but had to stay away rom hot food for a while. Quite a lot of lukewarm soup. :( Shouldn't be long though. Ice is great. I was recomended sugar tablets by the piercer to keep swelling down. And they really worked. Go for the softer solid foods (Nothing steaky) and it should be fine.

Anyone getting it done should have a can of coke of something beforehand. The sugar it in helps stop you from fainting.

^ that goes for anything, you should always eat something beofre you get pierced..well i do anyway... :o

um...you can get arnica 6c, i think it's called..you can get them in tablet form from health shops...anti-inflamatories...they're really good...i was recommended them when i got my wrist implants, but i just usually let the whole thing take it's own course it self, but if the swelling is really getting to you there's stuff you can get.
i'd say just suck on some ice though, should go down soon enought anyway!

Igot my tounge done about 2 years ago, the top part of the bar went into my tounge and the skin grew over it, because i changed bars to early,(smaller one).
just be careful of that. BTW its still there, anyone any hints apart from a stanley knife on how to remove it??
