Apologies for the lack of updates but I've been busy, busy, BUSY colouring my linework for Rodney Tentakle. My colouring process is a long, in-depth one (almost verging on OCD, I suspect), meaning it takes me quite a while to get a page completed.

Anyways, here's the final colours (obviously, speech bubbles and text have yet to be added):

I've also put the original inks up on my blog for comparison.

My last painting. Can't bend forward any more due to back problems. May have to lie on my back like Michelangelo. I just copy other people's work! This the boy that Caravaggio used in at least two paintings.

It's a very small link - could you post a bigger one? Looks good!

    Made this over the weekend also;

Probably the nicest bowl I've made to date, decided to keep the design simple so as not to detract from the lovely patterns in the grain.

The colours for page 3 of Rodney Tentakle are done! Here's a peek at one of the panels (as before with a comparison between the original linework and the finished colour):

Thanks for the compliments folks :o

Just made this for myself, it's an oval labret piece (goes in my lip) made of lignum vitae. The dimensions are 9mm high x 16mm wide and it's about as long. First time trying some carving/shaping, caught my fingers on the grinder, but totally worth it as I'm over the moon with it for my first go :D

Some nice work there, Melissa, your ability at rendering detail is very impressive. Do you have any sketches that show your process? I'm a sucker for loose, gestural sketches as they tend to show all of an artist's strengths and weaknesses in one quick glance.

Moving on, I've got more of my work on Rodney Tentakle to show you. This time, for a change, I've a full page. This one's page 5, depicting a flashback sequence involving the nefarious exploits of Dr. Tentakle!

I've been making bucket loads of bowls lately :pac:

Made this satin wood bowl for a mate who has left work. Nice way to spend a hungover sunday. Satinwood has a great sheen and will flash depending what way you view it, like labradorite if you get me :)

Made this yew bowl a few weeks back, the different colours all within one piece of wood. Love it.

    More lovely pieces Will.
Would love to try my hand at it some day. Is it expensive to get started?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

Uhm sorta, depends what type of turning you want to do whether it's large or small scale. A mini lathe will turn smaller items, around 6" or thereabouts. Cheaper than the bigger lathes obviously but limited in size.
You can get by with minimal tools. A grinder us important to keep chisels sharp. Got my stuff for about 700 or so ie lathe, chisels and a stand. A grinder will be around 100 for entry level and that's about it I think.

    Very enjoyable hobby/job :)

This is one I just finished for my daughter. My first try at oil pastel (I think it shows...lol) Top hand depicts my late hubby and bottom hand is mine, the golden heart is a symbol of our daughter.

Anzac 11, looks very good! I absolutely love working with oil pastel! There is a great forum on wetcanvas where oil pastelists hang around - http://wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=393

Looks really great - must be difficult to get it so delicate! You must have some collection built up at this stage - me thinks a craft market is nearly in order?
