Anyone stopped listening to radio for music?

    With MP3 players storage capacity forever growing, and fast internet connections allowing for downloads, the radio is under threat.
    So, has anyone stopped listening to the radio now for music?
    I rarely listen any more, and would only do so if totally stuck.
    I'd always have my MP3 player when I'm out and about, and have my CDs when at home.
    The only time I'd listen to the radio is to listen to sports commentary or news programmes on BBC 5 or Newstalk.

    Anyone else the same?

    Yeah,i'm the same, last radio station I tuned into for the music was phantom.
    Only time I hear music on the radio now is when I'm in a taxi or clothes shop.

    you rarely ever get anything but pop on the radio's

    larrys golden hour is ok ..

    mind u we switched from the idiot at 12 to 2 on 2fm to 104fm it seems better cuz they play like loads o songs and barely any stoppage

    Gave up listening to the radio years ago. It's awful.

    I do listen to Launchcast while online though, that's great.

    I'd rather sit in silence than listen to ****ty ****ty ads and REALLY annoying nasal DJs who are just asking to be shot in the face. I get a bit aggressive when talking about this. I haven't even gotten to the music bit.

    I never ever listen to the radio at home. I'm forced to listen to the radio at work. I'd say about 90% of the music played is absolute codswallop. Don't even get me started on the DJs. God bless my mp3 player.

    have I stopped listening to the radio? oh God yes!

    I've used the an MP3 player for nearly 3 years now and after a while I was beggining to wonder was I in fact missing out, so I was driving down the country with my brother the other day ( as a passenger) and I flicked on the car radio for a bit of music and the rubbish that was being piped through was unbelievable, tried station after station but it was all rubbish.

    Radio is fairly big money in advertising terms and as a result its all about playing the songs that 'people want to hear most' so that they don't change station and will stay tuned for the ads.

    So we've now got to the stage where a huge amount of radio listener-ship is prepared to swallow down whatever DJs force down their throat, i.e. Crazy Frog, David Blunt etc

    and until people go looking for something different all they are going to get is the same old crap.

    I stopped listening completely after John Peel died. Nowhere to go from there really!

    Tbh my radio has been out of commission even longer than that as I had been d/l'ing the show off the net as far back 2002.

    Yes.
    Newtalk suring the day sometimes but hopefull that will change

    Yep - if I know there's something good on - eg. BBC R6 has rock on a Saturday night and BBC R1 has a metal show late on a Tuesday night, if I decide to listen to music at that time, I'll tune in.

    But no, I don't randomly tune into stations, due to the vast majority of stuff on them being ****. Internet radio all the way.

    In the main radio is awful. It's a shame that you have to actively seek out a decent show on the radio and even then they're only on at certain times of the day.

    There are some good alternative shows, such as on Radio na Lifé 106.4 - I think this might be Dublin only but you might be able to tune in online.

    I try avoid the radio for music as much as possible - only times I hear it (hear not listen) are when it is being played by somebody else. The main thing that annoys me is the frequent mount of incredibly irritating ads in between songs and it also seems some channels have news reports every 15 mins

    Most irish radio line-ups works like this

    18.00 -> 18.05 news
    18.05 -> 18.07 ads
    18.07 -> 18.11 bloody crazy frog
    18.11 -> 18.12 ad for the radio station itself talking about how it plays non-stop music - eg. "fm999 plays non-stop hits - except for these retarded stops where someone with a weird fake accent talks about the lack of stops on the station"
    18.12 -> 18.16 generic rap song number 312
    18.16 -> 18.18 ads for nightclubs or broadband
    18.18 -> 18.20 Traffic reports
    18.20 -> 18.25 News again - same as 25 mins ago nothing has happened since - what a surprise
    18.25 -> 18.27 more ads
    18.27 -> back to crazy frog again or w/e rubbish is number one at the time

    after this it repeats over and over again .

    buy an mp3 player and rid yourself of this torment.

    i only listen to Gerry Ryan-thats it, cos IMO, music on the radio is awful.2FM plays pretty much the same 5-6 songs all day.

    I listen between radio and MP3 player. Usually only listen to talk shows n the radio and music on my MP3 player. The music on the radio is woeful :(
    I usually tune in and out of Newstalk 106 and Joe Duffy at 1:45pm and go home listening to Matt Cooper on Today FM!
    Imagine a job that didn't allow you listen to music/radio :eek:

    I still listen to radio for music but only for Donal Dineen's show on Today FM - absolutely class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

    Hercule has it spot on. I thought i had it bad listening to q102 in work but somebodys has changed it to 98fm. Thats is exactly how it goes.They have a recording half an hour long and play it on repeat. We even have bets on what time james blunt /black eyed peas etc will be on next. Id say they only play 10 songs all day. God id love to burn that station to the ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭p2kone

    radio not all bad

    how about
    ian demspey on today fm
    cormac battle on 2fm
    jenny hudson on 2fm
    bbc radio1
    just a few

    i very rarely listen to the radio for music as it is usually pretty woeful. i do however listen for news, sport etc. on occasion. BBC R5 Live normally on the most

    I'd sometimes put the radio on at home or in the car to listen to news but not for music. Whatever the station, they just seem to play all the same rubbish every hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

    with all the ads and news bulletins (annoyingly trying to complete with NEWStalk) there's only 4 tracks every hour on commercial radio. you know you're in dire straights when having 10 tracks without interruption (from ads, as opposed to a crap dj) is a great leap forward in radio

    I've never listened to radio. Radio in Dublin's been crap all my life.

    Music radio is dead to me until Zenith Classic Rock gets a licence!

    The last actual music show that I listened to on an ongoing basis was Donal Dineens on Today FM when it was from 9 then 10 till midnight. He plaed some fabulous stuff, I don't even know if he on radio as I type this.

    There was a time, way back when, legal radio wasn't catering for the youth culture by not playing the music they wanted to hear, they thought the music on legal radio was woeful.

    So to fill that need the pirates sprung up and played the music the others refused to play. Radio Luxembourg became a pop station, BBC Radio 1 was launched in 1967, RTE Radio 2 in 1979, all in response to the popularity of pirates and the music played by the DJs, it must have been seen as a very glamourous occupation what with guys floating around on ships broadcasting music.

    Back then people listened to music on their turntables since the radio wasn't playing it but how did they know when new music was released, where would they hear it first and then go out an buy it? Pirate radio stations.

    In the context of today what is there to fill the void, MP3 players? Where is newly found music to be heard first?

    On the radio.

    I listen to radio 95% of the time for the DJs! The other 5% is for the music!

    So you listen just for the personalities not the music, presumably these are daytime jocks all playing the same music?

    Wow. The amount of negativity towards radio on this thread is shocking!!!

    But it's also great, I thought I was the only one who thought radio has gone to the dogs!

    Radio was great in the 80's and 90's when local radio stations were freshly legal and were grateful to be on air, also were very listener orientated....

    Now it seems power has gone to their heads, listeners don't get a say in the music anymore (as in requests are only shout outs these days and music requests are out of the question).

    Playlists are crazily rigid and they play safe music!! It's SO annoying, bring back the pirates I say!!

    Radio stations have seem to have forgotten that the listener is god because without them they're f***ed.

    A subject I feel strongly about :eek:

    I listen to 2fm in the car mainly because all of the stations are fairly similar to it in terms of music and you don't have to put up with people thinking they know what they are talking about i.e.

    TheSPIN.jpg

    But otherwise News, Sport and Talk Radio (R1 or NewsTalk). Lyric and 4fm on occasion

    I only listen to the radio for news and chat, mostly on RTE Radio 1 or BBC 5 Live. I hate weekend afternoons when there's no alternative to music and sport.

    I wish there was an Indie/Alternative station that I could listen to. Phantom is only broadcast in the Greater Dublin area.

    I have to wait til certain times of the day on certain stations. I can't just tune in and bop to Indie/alt whenever I feel like it. Yet, there is a station dedicated almost solely to Classical. Now, I like Classical and I don't begrudge that situation, but there should be a license issued for an Indie/alt station to broadcast nationwide.

    There should be some regional Indi Rock stations like the Pop stations Beat, Spin and I radio. However it should possibly have been part of their licence to devote some time to a wide range of musical tastes rather than just simple pop catering for the 15 - 35. But in saying that Dublin should not have so many pop stations.

    However things I think will change in relation to 2FM and Today FM. Today FM will possibly drop their News and Current Affairs placing it on NewsTalk and will possible let 2fm compete with the regionals for pop which could lead it down the road of Indy Rock but that is up to them to rethink their strategy. As the own spin there should be no reason for them not to differentiate themselves.

    Whats 2XM like?

    Normally, I only listen to the radio when I'm making dinner. I'll usually have Radio 1 on so there won't be any music on anyway. If it's a horrible night out there and I've a lovely fire going I'll probably turn on the Irish station and relax with a nice book.

    2XM and it's dance counterpart, Pulse, are excellent. The playlists are full of brand new artists and the presenter led stuff is quite specialised. There are specific shows for specific tastes. The problem is that its not that easy to get...being on DAB. It also needs a lot more resources put into it to be at the same standard of the fm stations.

    It was interesting, I was watching a programme about BBC Radio 1 recently and about 15 years ago they were facing the same problem as 2fm - there were other commercial stations doing exactly what they were doing, so there wasn't much point for their existence. So BBC's response was to make it a station all about "New Music". Now look at it. Generally regarded as the best radio station in the world. Will 2fm ever take that route? Hell no. The new 2fm bosses idea of a dramatic overhaul is to basically swap Larry Gogan around with Nikki HAyes.
