I was waiting around 3 months to get my money back via chargeback. During that time I couldn't use purchased materials…
I choose my materials very carefully and it makes for me a difference if I get brush size 18 instead of 6 and it doesn't matter if 18 is more expensive. I needed size 6 for my artwork, but it seams The Art Materials Company knows better.

I attempted to order from them for the first time recently, they didn't dispatch my item, it was stuck on 'processing'. In the meantime they removed the item that I ordered from the site listings but didn't bother to let me know that it wasn't in stock.

I emailed and rang a few time, no answer to either at any time, voice mailbox still 'full' apparently. Today they've updated my order to 'rebate completed'. I had to go onto their site to see this, they didn't bother emailing me. I'm now awaiting my refund onto my card. Will never use them again, their complete lack of customer service is shocking.

I was in Woodies yesterday and they are selling canvases at half price. They were already cheap so the new prices are very good. Got a few mid sized ones. 300mm x 400mm for €2.75. Larger ones had a some dents so I didn't get any but people may be luckier in their local Woodies.

Also for anyone close to Balbriggan there is a shop on Station Road called Around Two Euro and they stock a lot of cheap art supplies which are useful for beginners and those on a budget. Their canvas boards seem grand and I'm trying a few of their stretched canvases as well. A pack of three stretched canvases 300mm x400mm is €7.99. I also picked up a tin of 12 sketching pencils for €2.00 and they seem to do the job with the range going from 6H to 6B.

Inspiring Ideas in Blanchardstown might be expensive, but it has an amazing range of products and the staff are always very helpful. They have a Christmas card making demonstration ongoing all day today.

So, was in town (Dublin City) today and unfortunately The Woolen Mills has closed down...
just when I needed it alas!

I could get what I needed from other surrounding shops (Evans, Hickeys, YellowBrick Road etc) but the fact i had to go to 3 different shops was a bit of a joke tbh


Does anyone know if there's a similar shop in Dublin of the same calibre that specialised in sewing/knitting accessories?
Hickeys is decent enough, but Woolen Mills was a fail-safe for specialising a specific needs... rare or common AND had a wider variety.

The thing about the gel is that the Liquitex costs €5.50 but what they gave me was W+N @ €10.95 + Atelier @ €9.95... I never used heavy gloss gels so rather than spend €10-€20 on stuff I thought I'd just try the cheap one first.

Don't get me wrong the stuff I got is better quailty like I pointed out above but it cost them €15 to replace a €5 order. Replacing the paint also left me some what confused, I think I'll just stick to Cork art supplies from now on.

I don't think any paints are promoted as food-safe (the manufacturers like to play it safe and not make that kind of claim) but Pebeo brand does a range of ceramic (Porcelaine 150) and glass paints (Vitrea 160), both of which are water-based and non-toxic. They're both suitable for ceramic and glass - the Porcelaine ones are opaque and Vitrea are transparent.
After you've painted and the paint has dried, bake the mug or glass in your home oven:- put the item in the cold oven, turn the oven on at the temperature indicated by the name (150C for Porcelaine paint, 160C for Vitrea paint) and bake for around 30-40 mins, depending on your oven. Then turn the oven off but leave the item in, so that it cools down gradually.
You don't actually have to bake but that makes the paint more durable... supposedly dishwasher safe but it will eventually fade, depending on how often you wash it.

The Vitrail range of glass paints give more vibrant colours but are solvent-based and therefore NOT suitable for dishware coming into contact with food.

You should be able to get Pebeo in art shops such as Easons, Inspiring Ideas, etc.

If ever you travel to Belfast..there is a Craftworld shop on Queens St. 2 mins from the central bus stop at the City Hall....Fabulous range of Craft materials for every interest inc ...casting powders ..resins ..mould making material....tons of stuff.
Worth a trip..... and sure you can use a visit to the Titanic experience as an excuse.

Hi, just a quick word to say that for the last few months, Easons in the Foyleside shopping centre, Derry have had a special on their Daler Rowney oil paint sets. 9 x 125ml tubes for £10.99, reduced from £49.95. I was up a while back and bought 15 sets.. happy days, as they say in Derry

Most shops sell them, they aren't difficult to source.

If it's a bought pattern it will tell you exactly how many rolls you'll need. If you are making up a pattern you will need to sit down and work out how big a block will be - one jelly roll is 2.5" x 40".

Are you planning to cut the strips or just use them whole? Immediately you will lose 0.25" for seams. So the more you cut up the rolls the more seams you will have and the more rolls you will need to buy.

The binding is also a factor. This is the material that connects the front of the quilt to the back (that runs around the outside). The width of the binding will also play a factor in how many rolls you will need.

For a King-size quilt I'd expect to use anywhere from 3 - 5 rolls (again... depending on binding, pattern, etc).

Quilt making is expensive! Add up the rolls, the binding material, the backing and the batting (the fluff inside) and you'll probably faint

Just don't forget about the seams when making calculations!

Contact your local library, I often see notices up for local groups and classes. In fact I think Rathfarnham library got a facelift recently, I must pop in and check it out myself.

I'm not sure if they do the big tubes, but it would be worth checking LPC in Derry (on the Diamond) or Sprint or Donegal Stationery in Letterkenny.

I bought a bag of the googly eyes in Evans, off Capel Street if you are in Dublin, they had small and large. But sometimes they might be in the pound shops or Dealz. Otherwise craft shops have them.

I was in Easons (Derry) who don't sell any printing ink, and LPC (Derry) sell the tiny tubes for 5.90.

Hey, does anyone know where I could buy a bag of flat glass beads? We've all seen them in vases and on tables at weddings for decoration, however they seem to be non existent at the moment! I mean the ones that are flat on one side, round on the other, normally clear but also come in colours? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try a garden centre or somewhere that sells homeware. You don't say where you are but, if you're in Dublin, Arnott's is a possibility.

Thanks Caros. I went there on Monday, mostly they stock artist stuff, paints, paper, brushes etc, they did have some fun craft stuff for kids though. I badly miss Hobby craft in the UK!
