    Hi all,

    I recently got NTL Broadband into my house and I have to say it is EXCELLENT! I am well impressed with it. The question I have is this.

    Is it possible for me to have the following set up? :

    I have the NTL modem connected directly into my PC using USB. (current set up)

    I want to set up a wireless environment for my laptop in the house also.

    Can anyone give me tips on how to do this?

    Thanks for you help!

    I also highly recommend NTL Broadband

    Buy a wireless router with a USB port on it. Configure to NTL settings, and sorted.

    Do I connect the Wireless router to the modem via USB as well as the cable going from the Modem to the PC?

    I assumed you could only have the modem directing data to one destination no?

    You should get one of the wireless routers from this page:
    http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/Category.asp?catid=2&l=1&cnL1=NTL/Telewest&PcatIDL1=2

    However most of them don't use USB, they use ethernet. So if you don't already have ethernet on your PC then you should buy an ethernet card, it will only cost about €10.

    The setup would be:

    NTL Modem -> Ethernet -> Wireless router -> Ethernet/Wireless -> PC/Laptop

    It may be possible to do:

    NTL Modem -> USB -> PC
    ...............-> Ethernet -> Wireless Router -> Wireless -> Laptop

    However I'm not sure if it will work and IMHO it is more trouble then it is worth, just buy an ethernet card for your PC.

    You're better off connection your NTL modem to a wireless ethernet router, such as, http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/shop/db.cgi?view=1&id=8139&type=6&path=14x120x7934

    PLug the modem into the ethernet WAN port, and the you can connect a network cable to the PC, and also have your wireless network as well. **Your PC will obviously need a network card.

    ....when you are connecting / setting up your router

    http://www.ntlworld.ie/help_centre/home_networking.asp

    you will have to have a NIC in your desktop or else get a wireless usb dongle/adaptor so both PCs will be wireless

    make sure you set up either WEP/WPA on the wireless network
    (see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=282581 for reasons why :eek:)

    you cannot use both the usb & ethernet ports on the modem at the same time
