What's worse is people knowing it's going to happen, paying in to see it, booing when they wave the flag and then cheering the band when they're not waving the flag either side of the flag waving (while most likely singing the lyrics too).

That doesn't make any sense to me.
Maybe so, but just because I don't want to see that part of the concert doesn't mean that I shouldn't pay in to see the rest of it.

I've already said that I am well aware of what The Trooper stands for and I have no problem with the song itself, the only problem I have is with the flag.

    It's that simple.
I totally agree, but would a Jew would be offended if someone was waving a flag with a swastika on it around stage? I'm pretty sure they would. That is the way some people see the Union Jack. I'm not speaking for myself when I say that, I'm speaking for the people who told me that.

But regardless of what happens, I'm going to enjoy the concert. It won't bother me but I will make my feelings known.

Why though? They're proud English people who wave a British flag as part of their show. They're no more or less English waving the flag than they are without it. When they play that song and the backdrop changes to the Trooper image, will you boo the artwork aswell? Would you boo the artwork in a record shop as you walk past it and maybe have a word with the manager that you are offended by the artwork but that you'd buy the CD anyway? If they offend you so much that you'd boo them for one song but cheer them the rest of the time then you've got some very unusual logic going on.

If flags are such a big issue then maybe the GPO shouldn't fly the Tricolour in case some tourists from Warrington or Omagh or Enniskillen come to visit. I mean, they might only want to send a postcard to a friend but instead they might remember some of the subhuman things done in the name of that flag. Oh, and every GAA club better take down their flags too because they might drive past on their way to the post office. It doesn't mean they don't want to see the rest of Ireland, they just find the flag offensive and we should change our way of life to accomodate those few people who might get upset by it, right?

I can't believe the bickering over the flag is still going on. Forgive and forget lads. No one gains anything from staying bitter.

Call it what you like, that is my feelings on the situation. I do not want to see the British flag being being waved in front of my face in my own country. I have no problem with them being British, I know alot of English people and get on better with them than I would with alot of Irish people to be honest.

The difference is that the GPO is in IRELAND, there is nothing wrong with flying your own flag in your own country. Our own flag would be offensive to some in the North I could very well imagine no Irish person would go up there and taunt them with it, even if it was a part of their show.

    Who said anything about taunting?

It's a fecking theatrical performance, it is part of the show. It's not a taunt or an insult or anything else. It's like going to a play in a theatre, nothing more. It's stage prop to enhance the visual aspect of the evening.

Yes it is, since it's an image of the performance in question.

I'd be interested to find out how many of the people who are so bothered by this that they feel the need to boo (or even throw things at the band, the lowest form of protest) also acted at the various gigs where bands they didn't consider "rock" enough have played and have been pelted with missiles. This summer has seen more major live shows in Ireland than ever before and people still insist on giving a big **** you to one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The show is about the performance and the music, not the politics. Stop reading into it so much.

Tell me what it adds to the performance then... other than pissing off thousands of people.

Exactly, its about the performance and the music, not the politics. So why do they insist on waving around the flag?

Because they've always done it. It doesn't mean anything beyond the context of the song. It isn't intended as an insult and nor should it be taken as one. It isn't ignorant of the band to continue an element of their stage show that has always exists, it's ignorant of an audience to want special treatment because they see insult where there is none. I'm as patriotic as an Irish person can be, but taking offence at an English band having a British element to their show is ludicrous.

The flag is only political in the eye of the beholder. The band certainly don't use it as a political totem. It is part of the show, nothing more.

Why do they insist on using the flag in their artwork?

Let's see... A lone man in an old British red coat, standing proud and belting out a galloping, thumping song about one of the most well-known military events in history. You're not getting any mental images of charging horses, picking up the banner from the fallen and soldiering on no matter what, are you? Lord knows I am.

Sharon should stick to what shes good at , hooking up with Louis Walsh and leavin em pick out a pussy band of nobodys for the X Factor or whatever they call it.
Maiden rule , the only reason I even know who sharon Osbourne is , is because the one time I saw the Osbournes all i can remember is her annoying whiney voice , silly cow!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,457 ✭✭✭Blisterman

I agree with sharon throwing Iron maiden off Ozzfest, if that's really how he behaved. You don't start insulting the headliner and expect to be allowed stay on the tour.

If she felt they shouldn't be on the tour that's fine. Getting her kids to throw eggs, lighters and other assorted **** from the crowd at them is stupid and dangerous. Cutting the PA and lame attempts at getting "Ozzy" chanted and continual disruptions of Maiden's set is just jipping the punters who paid over $120 to see the gig. Her behaviour was childish and unprofessional and she came across as an attention grabbing bint, regardless of how justified she may or may not be to bear a grudge against Bruce and the lads.
