Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Help needed for a 3 Day Trip in Dublin

    Hi there,

I am from Singapore and planning to make a 3 day trip in Dublin end of October. Can any of the helpful souls out there tell me where is a reasonable and nicely located place to stay? Also, what are the must-do or must-see things? I would like to see the real Dublin, not the usual tourist route. Perhaps a few tips on some real irish food? I have search for restaurants and cafes for the whole day but most of the guides i found online are more ´modern´ or continental. Lastly, not forgetting a good pub or club.

Thank you very much and I look forward to visiting your city.

The Four Seasons in Ballsbridge is a nice place to stay.

    Nice, but hardly reasonable Rb_ie.

Viola, your best bet is to check some websites for Dublin. Do a search through some of these sites:

    http://www.accomodationdublin.com/

    http://www.visitdublin.com/accommodation/

    http://www.dublinhotels.com/

I've had friends from abroad stay at this one:

    Albany House
    http://www.byrne-hotels-ireland.com/albany-house.htm
    84 Harcourt Street, Dublin 2. Tel: 00 353 1475 1092

It is reasonable and very central. Anything in "Dublin 2" is.

As to things to see and do. This is my own website of photos of the city.

Dublin is quite small and walking around is a good way to see. As when visiting any city for the first time, the first thing to do is take a bus tour. There are a number of companies running these in Dublin. Having done that you will have a few ideas of places that you would like to see again.

3 days doesn't give you much time, but a trip outside the city to one of the nearby coastal towns like Dún Laoghaire, Howth or Malahide is nice. As to pubs and clubs, there are no shortage of them. There are many so it is hard to recommend one, so I won't. Wherever you end up staying, ask them for advice on that and anything you want to know. They'll have plenty of ideas on things to do, places to see, good food etc.

Just go and have a good time. You'll find all sorts of special things yourself that us natives would not know about. Whatever happens, you should have a good time. Enjoy yourself, and maybe report back to us.

One final and important point. If you are coming on the last weekend, just to let you know that Monday 31st is a Bank Holiday in Dublin, so lots of things will be closed, though not everything.

Oh i thought she meant a reasonable quality hotel

Opps, my mistake. I thought reasonable sounds better than cheap and accessible. :p I prefer to spend more on food and drinks and shopping then a bed to sleep but thanx for the suggestion. I will try to stay in the Four Seasons when I am not travelling alone.

Then it will be good if I plan to visit Dún Laoghaire, Howth or Malahide on 31 Oct? I think that will take a while as i have to take the DART and is quite a distance away. When do the shops closed, if they are opened at all, on Sundays? I am staying now in Germany and Sundays are ´dead town day´.

As for Flukey´s website, i am not able to view the pictures except the Spire.

    Have a nice week!!

    Viola

The Four Seasons is a very exclusive and expensive hotel. Many shops do open on Sunday. Sunday is livelier here than in Germany.

I don't know why you could not view the Dublin website. Try again.

A trip to Dún Laoghaire is very nice. I have a little website on there too and Howth, but Dun Laoghaire would be better to visit. It is a large town and there is plenty of places to eat etc. Weather-permitting, a walk along the pier in Dún Laoghaire is a must.

Sundays are ok in the city centre. Most shops are open but close earlier, only some of the smaller ones are closed. The suburbs such as Dun Laoighaire are totally dead however. Isn't the 31st a bank holiday in Ireland? My diary says it's a national holiday for the ROI. If that's the case there will be nothing open in Dun Laoighaire but you can still have a walk along the pier and go to a cafe. Always a good thing to do on a sunny day.

Dún Laoghaire is a lovely place to walk along the pier. If you're out that area get the Dart to Dalkey and Killiney, Dalkey is a little seaside-ish village, and the view on the Dart from Dalkey to Killiney really is something else

You can wave at Bono and other celebrities as you pass their homes there too.

Viola, I think I've fixed the problem you were having, so you should be able to view those photos now.

    To Flukey,
I don´t know why I still can´t view the pictures from Dublin City, the others are very nice. Hope i can also see some seals too. Could it be the operating system that I am using? It is Linux and It is in German, which I am too lazy to figure it out. However, I will try again on my friend´s computer. Thanx.

I have found this website from one of the travel forums here and it seems to have better deals than most other websites for Dublin. www.booknowlimited.com

I will ask the tourist information again if any of the tourist attractions will be opened on 31 Oct. otherwise, have to rethink the dates. Trying to make the best of the 3 days because the plane is landing in the afternoon and leaving in the afternoon.

One more question, is the breakfast in Dublin´s hotel worth paying for or is it better to take a room without breakfast and eat somewhere else outside? I am asking this because most of the italien hotel´s breakfast are miserable and not worth the price.

Wave a stone?? I don´t think that is such a good idea this year when there is so many security unstablity. I would not want to be caught and search for nothing. ;)

Most breakfasts in hotels are good. But don't pay way over the odds for them. You can get a full irish breakfast for about 7 euro in most cafes. I would reccommend doing the "Literary Pub Crawl". It starts in the Duke Pub and tickets can be purchased from the tourist office in Suffolk street.

Do the bed and breakfast alright and eat out the rest of the time Viola. the site should work. There was one small problem, but I fixed that a couple of days ago now. Maybe try Internet Explorer if you have it. As to tourist attractions, a lot will be open that day and a lot of things you will see just walking past them. There are a lot of such things on that site, if you can get it to work.

Great. Now you have an idea of what to expect. You will see a lot of those landmarks as you pass through the city. It is fairly small and a lot of those things are very near each other.
