So I spent all of last tuesday taking off in second gear.

Luckly for me i drive a diesel so it actually wasn't that much of a problem, just pile on the rev's and off she goes.

Basically what happend is this - it simple became impossible to get it into first from a standing start. The gear stick just could not be pushed into first gear. It was also difficult, but not impossible to get into 2nd and 3rd. Interstingly if i changed down while still moving, stopping at lights or whatever, there wasn't a problem.

On a couple of days since it's been very stiff but the same thing hasn't happend again.

Now i bought this particular car(99 Mazda 323 2.0TD) a couple of months ago so it's still under warrenty. The milage is high at over 100k, but everthing seemed to running smootly so thats wasn't a problem. I'll be dropping it into the dealer but I'd like to have some idea of what's wrong before i do, and I know as much about the workings of clutches/engines as i do about quantum physics. Any thoughts?

I wouldnt say its a clutch problem, the the gearbox make a ratlling sound in neutral while engine is running, -if so might be the bearings.

Prime suspect though is that it probably just needs gearbox oil , id say that wud do the trick

Yeah as already said it's not the clutch. Could be the gear linkage, that often causes and inability to get 1st & reverse. Definitely check for gear oil of course!!

That's odd, my family's Micra had the exact same symptoms and it was the clutch.

Gears would only change down with ease, a struggle to change up, 1st wouldn't engage at all.

We got the clutch replaced and 'twas all nice and handy

    Interesting.
A coworker here has a Ford Escort but with a Mazda Japan engine and gearbox.

Anyway it developed a strange and as yet unknown problem.

As far as i could determine "something" happened in the clutch. When pressed it made some aweful sounds (growling). When not pressed, it sounded normal.
Also, with the clutch pressed it was impossible to get it into gear, any gear, for or rev.

Once moving it was easy get between gears. So we took to putting it in gear first, then starting it, that worked OK for a few days.
Then as abruptly as it began it stopped and returned to normal operation.

So I suspect a part of the clutch material broke off or something funky happened with the thrust bearing or pawls. Anyway, it's working OK for the last several weeks since it self-repaired.

But check the oil level anyway.
Easy way to check the clutch. Try getting it in to reverse. If the gears grate endlessly, its a dragging clutch problem. If it does not grate going into rev, it means the gears are stopped, but the engagement is difficult, and probably due to a linkage issue.
if it rattles and growls when ideling with the foot off the clutch and stops making noise when pressed, it's a bearing or gear or both.
