When miles became kilometres many areas that had "30 painted in white cicrcles on the road had the 3 blanked out, presumably the intention was to paint on a 5 but difficulty may have arisen as to whether the text kmph was also required under the figure, it is likely that the rules relating to these painted road markings mirror the metal signage rules which use the word kmph maybe just educated guess
