The 1997 - 2004 MkI S40 was a joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi. It shared alot of parts with the Mitsubishi Carisma including the 1.8 Direct Injected petrol engine. Both were built in the same factory in Holland. The 1.9 TD is a Renault engine and while not particularly fast or refined it was economical if a bit noisy.

Do a search for the S40 on this forum as there quite a few threads from current or previous owners who will have first hand experience of this car. Also check out http://www.honestjohn.co.uk for his opinion.

    I bought a 2002 1.9 s40 in NI last year.
It had full spec, leather seats, Winter pack, cruise control, the works. It is 115bhp engine. I find it very quick, especially overtaking has loads of mid-range torque.
Whole thing cost me 8,400 euro which included the 2,500 VRT robbed by the Gov. It had 100,000 miles with full service history. Have put another 20,000 on with no problems. I see some garages looking for 14,000 upwards and the service cost is a joke. £450 previous owner was paying which is why I never buy or deal with Garages. Got mine done for 250 euro which included new pads.
