If the SU are still running their free films on Monday nights in the Jean Monnet, they sometimes have really good stuff on there. Always regret not going. Join some clubs and socs if you're not from the area, it's a great way to make new friends and there's a club for everyone so you're guaranteed to meet like minded people.

Is that foreign film festival? UL film society don't run that. Its quality though.

One word: Freedom! For most first years, its their first time living away from home. I didnt take full advantage of it in first year, because i stayed in digs, but the freedom to sit around your sitting room, drinking beer, without a chance of your parents being around, is great.

I read that at least two UL first years - both girls- committed suicide during the last academic year. Obviously some find it tougher to fit in than others.

I'd imagine that it would be easy enough for an undergrad to feel lost, coming from a secondary school and a town where you know everyone to the UL campus. I suppose class parties, clubs & socs and even the student counsellors are the best defence against that.

    Where did you "read" that.

UL is great for first years, the campus is nice and insulated and plenty of fun in the bars and socs, plenty of "craic" to be had and many lovely people who attend, on the downside there is probably more then enough complete boggers who seem to have got lost along the way when making the transition from ape to cavemen to human, generally these types wear gaa shirts (tipp mainly) and so are easily avoided just dont mess with the hurling soc.i say all this with a tear in my eye as im just in the process of dropping outta UL, aah the memories......

Are you suggesting I can't read or that I made it up?!

Anyway, "Dave", let me know if you need help with the big words...

I thought you made it up to be honest. I hadn't heard anything about it, but you put me in my place :D

Personally im looking forward to a whole new batch of young first year girls... ;)

Anyway UL is completely different to the small back-water town secondary schools, its an awakening!

It'd be a pretty sick thing to make up, though until I saw the article and another piece in the Leader just lately I hadn't heard a word about it either. Then, its hardly something people broadcast about or newspapers write about.

Well by made up I meant, "My friend heard of his sisters friends cousin down the pub that...." you know how these things go.

Are there many Dubliners in UL?

Thinking of going there next year, and, no problem with boggers but I will without doubt need a few dubs to keep me sane.

    No.

And that attitude won't get you very far.

That should actually be one of the good things about UL for first years:

    Not many Dubs ;)

Seriously, though, compared to secondary school any college is a totally new experience, just the absolute variety of people you meet. You'd never realise how secluded one area and it's ideals are until you're put into daily contact with a different group of people. It's great!

Never heard of Limerick citizens being called boggers before.......but anyway, I sure am looking forward to being back. Nothing beats a day of playing pool and dining in the fine cuisine that is Paddocks or Scholors, and then hitting the clubs for another recital of Irelands top 40.

Dubs call anyone outside the Pale boggers.

Saying you need a few Dubs to keep you sane defeats the purpose of going to a new place, meeting new people.

Thankfully the Dub accents are few and far between in these parts :p
